I tutor ACT/SAT in two-hour blocks, covering all four multiple choice sections of the exam. Beyond teaching any missing or forgotten English grammar and math content, I focus on teaching specific procedures to be used in each section to improve accuracy and pacing. My procedures help students guide and streamline their comprehension and decision-making processes on the exam while avoiding common, predictable errors.
At the sessions, we begin by working through the content and procedures together. Because accuracy must always be developed before speed, students then practice the procedures untimed on homework ACT sections. (For example, the problems in the math section increase in difficulty as the test progresses. A student who only has time to answer the first two-thirds of the problems correctly before randomly guessing on the twenty most difficult problems would score a 26 on most exams.) We review the specific errors at the session and address why the correct answer is right, what mistake in thought process, procedure, or content led the student to their specific error, and how the student must approach the problem differently in the future to avoid this mistake and promote the correct answer. After one or two untimed sections, students begin working through sections timed witho
Thore does not simply teach the ACT, he teaches the ACT to his student.
What I mean by the statement above is that Thore teaches the material in a way that each student can understand it. He truly understood how I was thinking about problems and taught in methods that complemented my thought process. This method of teaching made it easier for me to grasp material and learn how to do the problems faster. For example, my reading scores were low so he had me perform a passage in front of him and he identified that I was focusing on unimportant details rather than the purpose of the passage itself. Thore then proceeded to teach me methods to combat this issue and as a result, my reading section score increased by 8 points. Besides teaching methods, Thore has a vast knowledge of material. Yes, he has to teach students material because schools simply don't cover essential concepts that are tested by the ACT such as English grammar. Thanks so much Thore! P.S. I'm Thore's student and he has helped me increase my score by 5 composite points (25 to 30).Mathew, 9 lessons with Thore

Once again Lilah's practice test scores are SO much higher now than from the beginning like night and day!. You really got to know her style and "diagnosed" her trouble spots to a T. You always explained everything in a way she understood and gave her lots of homework knowing how important that component of tutoring is. It was like magic, after a period of time, something clicked and she thoroughly learned how to take this test based on all your strategies, procedures, tips and teaching the content she didn't know at first. Today is her big day and hopefully her last ACT test!! Thore is an amazing, warm caring person ( tough when he feels the need) and takes the extra time to really know how his student operates and customizes each session to meet the needs of student.Wendy, 18 lessons with Thore
Knowledgeable and organized
Thore appears very knowledgeable in the areas of the ACT. He understood where our son was needing assistance according to the ACT test. Thore provided our son with great structure and organization that our son requires to succeed. Now it's up to our son to use the tools that Thore provided him.Becky, 7 lessons with Thore
Thore is an outstanding ACT tutor. He helped our daughter prepare for the ACT starting about six weeks in advance of the test. Our daughter found him to be personable, engaging, and effective. He identified the areas in which improvements could be made, including content readiness but also extending into test-taking and time management strategies. On nuts-and-bolts matters, he was always on time, always made complete and very focused use of the tutoring session, and was responsive to scheduling emails and other communications. Our daughter reached her goal score result, and she and we credit Thore for contributing to her success. Thanks Thore!David, 4 lessons with Thore

Knows the ACT
Thore completed an initial review of a prior ACT exam my son had taken. Thore then helped my son with test taking methods that my son felt would have saved him nearly 20 minutes of time with his prior exam and also better approach the problems in a more methodical fashion. My son also said that Thore is extremely smart.Kevin, 1 lesson with Thore
I have been more than pleased with the attention Thore has given my son. His comprehension and style of test taking have dramatically improved. I have also noticed my son becoming more proactive than reactive to assignments, homework and upcoming obligations. Highly recommend Thore.Gwen, 8 lessons with Thore
