I am passionate about and experienced in all the subjects I tutor.
Educated in the French school system, I obtained my undergraduate degree from the University of Paris, France, and then a PhD in Biochemistry from the Univ. of Minnesota where I was a Teaching Assistant for 3 years. Back in Europe, I did scientific research in Paris and then in Milan, Italy where I lived for 12 years. Combining my love of science and languages I then worked for 15 years as a certified translator and interpreter for French and Italian. I have assisted elementary school students in a homework help after school program for the past 4 years.
I tailor the content of the lessons to fit the student's needs. For curriculum based tutoring I will identify knowledge gaps or misunderstood concepts to then focus on those areas. Whether a student needs the basic beginner tool kit or conversation practice because his or her language skills are rusty, I offer native fluency and accent, and the cultural insight that comes from living and working in those languages for years.I also love to cook so I am throw in a recipe for good measure! Luann is so patient and a fantastic teacher. She goes out of her way to help me learn with extra worksheets.
I had 2-1/2 years of French 35 years ago and have used it only sparingly. I now work for a French company and my goal is to work with a tutor to resuscitate my French skills. Luann has been very helpful thus far in providing both grammatical and conversational tutoring. She responds promptly to emails and has been flexible in scheduling appointments. I would recommend Luann to others.
For my first lesson, Luann was an excellent tutor, very competent, patient, and very current and knowledgeable in the French language. We did much of the lesson just getting to know each other in French, but there was no problem switching to English when I had something to explain or when I wanted to know how to say something in French. I was nervous going into our first meeting, but found Luann very supportive, and very able to be flexible to meet my needs. I look forward to future meetings.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been speaking French fluently since the age of 10. I attended a French school in France so I grew up learning French grammar and composition just like a native. Working as an English<>French translator and interpreter for 15 years allowed me to perfect my skills. I have tutored school age children of different ages and successfully helped a High School student skip a year of French in order to take AP French and go on to do well on that test.
I can provide conversation practice at a high level and provide help with pronunciation, and love to share insights into the culture.
I lived and worked in Italy for 12 years and speak fluent Italian with a good (Milanese!) accent and worked as an Italian to English translator for 15 years. I have tutored and conducted an Italian conversation group.
