Comment from parent: Natalie is currently a language & literacy tutor for my 7th Grade daughter and my Kindergartener son. We are very pleased and delighted to have Natalie as our tutor and she has been a great help for my daughter with essay writing, grammar, citations and overall writing success. She recently began tutoring my 6-year old son in reading and writing and he is anxious about attending the session and doing homework. Natalie comes well prepared and organized bringing lots of materials that are helpful and relevant. We hope to continue tutoring with Natalie for years to come.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have had success in teaching reading literatures and writing strategies to students in middle and high-school toward success in test-taking. I provide my students with practice resources that specifically highlight each strategy component needed for test success, but that also extend into academic success at the school classroom level.

English

I am qualified to teach English from learning vocabulary to comprehension of text in a variety of genres. I can assist your learner in exploring and understanding author purpose in literature, writing responses to reading, and grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence structures and the traits of writing. We can discuss ELA strategies of analysis of literature and poetry as well as genres of presentations and film, if applicable.

I am able to work with your school curriculum, and have excellent resources, such as organizers, short quizes and worksheets, and examples of text and of writing from which to supplement classroom materials.

Learning is scaffolded, with the student gradually learning and working with strategies for independent reading and writing.

ESL/ESOL

I currently have completed a Masters of Arts in English Language Learner teaching. This certificate is highly promoted by TESOL International. This teaching certification also permits me to teach K-12 ELL students as well as adults.

In addition, I also have an M.S.Ed. in Reading/Literacy, which is a wonderful combination for working with ELLs. I also hold a Cambridge University CELTA certificate in teaching adult ESL.

I have experience working with ELL students of all ages. I have curriculum for speaking, writing, reading and listening. My lessons are fun and provide learning for students in communicative classroom strategies.

I can also work with K-12 ELL students on content academics and school curriculum. I am familiar with common core standards, state testing and SAT/ACT Reading and Writing preparation.

Flute

I have played the flute since the age of six, hold a Music Degree Teachers license in two states, MN and WA and have taught privately off and on for about 20 years. I majored in college in flute and violin, playing in orchestra, ensembles, solos, band, marching band, small groups and for opera and musical theater. I studied one summer in upstate New York with professional faculty from Julliard School of Music in New York. I teach piano, violin, and recorder as well.

Grammar

I have many years of experience in learning/teaching grammar. It is one of my favorite subjects because it has so much to do with reading and writing!

I have studied this for teaching ESL and for teaching Reading and Writing. I have lots of excellent resources and a lot of enthusiasm to go along.

IELTS

I have worked with adults in preparation for advancement in levels in ESL and for IELTS testing. I am familiar with the four domains of ESL teaching and learning, and the types of questions and format of the exams. I have access to preparation materials and online practice.

Phonics

I am currently in my final semester of a M.S.Ed. program in Elementary Reading and Mathematics. I just also completed Student Teaching in Learning Disabilities, which cover primarily reading and mathematics as well. I hold Teacher Licenses in two states, MN and WA. I have tutored privately for 3 years now, and have taught private music lessons for over 20 years. I am also licensed in English as Second Language K-12, and Music, and just added Special Education Learning Disabilities.

Piano

I have played the piano since the age of five, this being the first musical instrument that I learned, and I hold a Music Degree Teachers license in two states, MN and WA and have taught privately off and on for about 20 years. I majored in college in flute and violin, playing in orchestra, ensembles, solos, band, marching band, small groups and for opera and musical theater. I studied one summer in upstate New York with professional faculty from Julliard School of Music in New York. I teach piano, violin, and recorder as well. I really enjoy teaching beginning to about 3-4 years level piano and have some excellent series of books, including music theory that I use to teach. I can teach using an electric keyboard as well as a standard piano.

Reading

I enjoy teaching reading and writing skills to students of any age. It is enjoyable to teach literature in a variety of genres. Students learn about author purpose, author voice, literary devices and figurative language, character and plot analysis and interpretation toward writing tasks. We also study vocabulary, comprehension strategies, sight words and spelling. I focus on an organized approach to comprehending reading for the student to promote the ability to monitor their reading in literature and in academics. In addition, work in reading contributes much to writing skills, as do discussions, vocabulary, sight words and spelling.

SAT Reading

To be successful in the SAT test, a student should have a really good concept of reading comprehension strategies, and know how to use these strategies with ease. I feel that it is important for students to have a strong skill in comprehension that include: interpreting and defining author purpose, ability to analyze plot, setting and characters as they contribute to the purpose of the writing, vocabulary, and the ability to accurately articulate these strategies and apply them. In addition, an ability to analyze text with respect to main topics and supporting details is important, as is the ability to formulate questions for further inquiry.

To facilitate learning and using these strategies, I can offer organizers to support pre reading, during reading and after reading inquiry into text; whether it is nonfiction, informational text, fictional narrative or other genres. I promote student text notations while reading to facilitate understanding. I am able to supplement curriculum with thoughtful questions toward understanding literal, inferential and critical thinking about the text of study. Students will explore and investigate different types of text, such as persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and study fact and opinion with the result of a thorough understanding of the features of each type of writing.

I have College Board teaching materials and materials for student use for study.

SAT Writing

I have College Board Teacher Test Preparation materials for the SAT Reading test. I am highly qualified to tutor in this area, as I have a Masters in Education in Reading and Literacy, K-12.

I enjoy working with students on writing. I focus on the structure and details of the writing, following the six traits of writing. I can help you as a writer to find your unique voice and style, while improving on all aspects of the writing process in order to meet the specific requirements of your writing assignments, or to meet a standard of writing for any project you may be working on.

I can offer pre-writing strategies teaching, research and organizational skills, time management, referencing and formatting help.

I am an avid writer and reader, and believe strongly that a well-written and focused essay or paper is an achievement worth producing.

Spelling

Spelling and vocabulary are integral parts of the reading process, and there fore, contribute greatly to the overall success of a student in school and in life.

Some students may need help with phonics, sight words, and reading fluency to supplement and practice their learning about vocabulary, including spelling.

Practice in creating sentences and writing tasks associated with text both help the student to reinforce learning.

There are many resources available to teachers in the process of working on spelling. Reading is an important part of the teaching of spelling.

Violin

I have played the violin, flute and piano since the age of six, hold a Music Degree Teachers license in two states, MN and WA and have taught privately off and on for about 20 years. I majored in college in flute and violin, playing in orchestra, ensembles, solos, band, marching band, small groups and for opera and musical theater. I studied one summer in upstate New York with professional faculty from Julliard School of Music in New York. I teach piano, violin, and recorder as well.

Writing

I work with students on all of the aspects of the writing process, from spelling to the final draft and more. We can also consider word processing, Power Point presentations and even writing portfolios. Writing is creative, or expository, persuasive, genre specific, or student experience based.

Much of the time, getting organized is a big part of learning to write with efficiency. Equally important is knowing your topic well, and having the words to use to convey ideas concisely and fluently for the reader.

Through the study of writing strategies, the student learns to communicate effectively through writing using an effective thesis statement, topic analysis and details, correct grammar and syntax, conveying meaning through tone, voice, literary devices and figurative language, use of rhetoric, and summarizing, for example.

There are many different types of writing, based upon the author's task at hand. I can offer pre writing organization, editing, draft and final draft assistance. I can assist with resources and references.
