I earned a Master's Degree in French and English at the University of Minnesota and taught beginning French as a graduate assistant at the University of Minnesota. I also studied Italian at the University of Minnesota and with a private Italian tutor from Berlitz.
I was awarded a French Government Assistantship to teach English conversation in a Paris lycee for two years and I completed my French studies at the Sorbonne during this time.
I love teaching and enjoy seeing a student progress in their skills in speaking English and/or French, Italian and reading.

For 28 years, I have been a Trip Director with a large incentive travel company and have traveled the world, operating incentive travel programs on-site for Fortune 500 companies. I've done more than 400 travel programs.

Mr. Barry made our 1st tutor session to teach my son cursive a very delightful experience. He made the scheduling simple and was so kind to meet us at a location convenient for us, which was very much appreciated. My son enjoyed his lesson, and said, "Mr. Barry is really nice and it wasn't boring but fun." And, this is from a kid who was not excited to go to this 1st meeting :). He listened carefully and helped me with my pronunciation. I liked that he wanted me to start with verbs and their conjugation. Vocabulary is not much use unless you can use it in conversation.
Barry taught me about the subjontif, popular French songs, and pronunciation. Thanks to him, I got 50 out of 50 on my test.
Barry is excellent tutor with a lot of experience. I am shy person who doesn't like to speak English In front of a lot of people and also I have thick African accent. First meeting with Barry can be rated as a highly successful encounter. He is so friendly and we could see right away that he has a true love for teaching and for the French language. Barry is energetic and super-enthusiastic. He loves teaching French! And more than just the language, his teaching of the culture and customs and daily life enhances the lesson.
Barry is helping me as I begin my second semester of French at The University of Minnesota. He has tailored a program for me that has increased my confidence and French speaking/listening ability. He is an engaging man who loves to talk about anything French, from wine, to the French Revolution to Monet. Part of my lesson plan includes talking about and describing the paintings of Monet, in French, of course and what I expect to do, see and hear on a future trip to Monaco to see the French Grand-Prix. He is an excellent tutor who is helping me toward achieving my goal of an "A" grade in my next semester of French.
7/12/2013 -- exciting, we are now going to learn the French Literary tenses by reading short selections from Madame Bovary by Flaubert.
Barry is kind, patient, and exuberant. His enthusiasm for the French language (and for France itself) is infectious and exciting. The time flies by in our lessons. He is a great tutor, and I look forward to continuing to learn with him.
He is a wonderful instructor. His love for the French language and his desire to enhance my understanding, speaking abilities, and writing comes from his heart. He is both patient, and animated. You can tell he gets just as excited as the student when the student finally understands something, or pronounces a word correctly. He is very approachable and knowledgeable of both the French language and culture. He is a tutor who will truly help you advance and become excited about your subject!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied calligraphy at Reed College In Portland, Oregon. My professor was Lloyd J. Reynolds, an authority on the history of calligraphy and handwriting. I use the Florentine alphabet and use an osmiroid pen to do calligraphy. Everyone comments on my handwriting and I like teaching handwriting to children.
