About Jonathan

Learning languages has changed my life! I never realized how many opportunities would present themselves or how many wonderful people I would meet just by knowing another language. The people I have met internationally have treated me with kindness and taught me to be ambitious about the world around me. My goal: to return the favor.

Growing up, I learned Spanish from a Colombian woman who came to live with my mother and I. After three years spent with her, I spoke better Spanish than English and she became my Colombian "sister."

My professional experience began in 2006 when I taught a basic-level Spanish language course to a class of middle school students. In 2008 I began working as a Spanish Language Mentor Counselor at Concordia Language Villages, a summer immersion camp located in Bemidji, MN. My focus while educating both children and teens was to transmit language knowledge and cultural education. For example, on of my elective classes was entitled, "Social Justice in Latin American Music". I integrate music, conversations, and reading (TPRS) in my teaching strategies.

In 2011 I began work for the Mexican Tourism Board (a satellite company of the Mexican Federal Government) as a Social Media Specialist. The biggest challenge for me was to educate professionals in the travel industry about travel to Mexico and to reassure American travelers on the security issues.

I also possess an extensive knowledge of Latin American literature. As a graduate of Loyola University, I researched and presented on both classic and modern Latin American writers and poets. While attending Universidad de Sanfrancisco de Quito, I conducted an intensive study of Ecuadorian Novels and Native American Anthropology.

As a Spanish/Japanese tutor, my intention is not only to educate my students, but to focus on pronunciation and cultural knowledge. I am passionate about creating experiences and opportunities for my students by means of language education.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
