About Justin

If you're looking for someone who can help you or your son/daughter boost SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT scores or are trying to improve high school or college math performance -- you've come to the right place. I believe that I possess the expertise, experience, passion, and interpersonal skills of an outstanding test prep and math tutor.

My academic background has both depth and breadth. I graduated from Boston College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Political Science (double major) and then earned my Master's Degree in Teaching with a concentration in Social Studies Education from Montclair State University in 2009. In addition, I have completed 30 college credits in mathematics with a cumulative math GPA of 4.0.

I have a Minnesota Teaching License in Social Studies and am currently pursuing adding a Minnesota Mathematics certification to my license. I also hold a Colorado Teacher Certification for Mathematics and a Colorado Teacher Certification for Social Studies.

After working for a year as a tutor at the Huntington Learning Center, I decided to start my own private tutoring business. I now have more than ten years of experience and proven results as a tutor, mostly for SAT and ACT preparation but also for GRE and GMAT prep. I teach all three areas of the SAT (Math, Reading, and Writing) and all four areas of the ACT (Math, Reading, English, and Science). I also have three years of experience as a high school mathematics teacher and have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry as a full-time classroom teacher to students grades 9-12.

My approach to SAT and ACT test prep focuses on two points of emphasis: the development of an effective strategic approach along with the strengthening of specific concepts of mathematics. For mathematics these include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, and Trigonometry; for reading these include comprehension/analysis (inferences, main idea, purpose, tone, literary devices) and vocabulary building and decoding (prefixes, roots, suffixes); for writing these include rules of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure along with the verbal concepts of persuasiveness and style.

Students who commit to my program by meeting regularly and by consistently studying the materials and completing the homework between sessions will typically see overall SAT score increases of 200 points or more. However, I make no guarantees of such results because SAT/ACT preparation is a cooperative partnership between teacher and student in which the test taker must fully invest himself or herself in the process in order to maximize his/her potential.

In addition, I also tutor nearly all of the academic school subjects, including biology, environmental science, history, philosophy, politics, literature, composition, and study skills among others.

I have worked with students of all ages (elementary school to adult) and have helped students of all ability levels.

Teaching is something in which I engage with the utmost passion; it is not merely a career for me but rather a vocation. My dedication to the field is evident in every lesson that I teach.

I pride myself on my ability to develop a strong rapport with my students and my talent for motivating them to achieve success. As a highly-skilled and passionate educator, I look forward to the opportunity to do the same for you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
