Hi,

I have taught for 15 years- mostly high school and some middle school. Growing up speaking two languages has allowed me to meet all kinds of people. I like working with young people, they are very interesting and very bright. At Berlitz language school, I taught adults who either wanted to learn English or Spanish.

Areas are: Language(English/Spanish), Reading/writing or math
Techniques: Logic, rhymes, games and practice

For English and Spanish, we will work on you pronunciation and common problem areas.

Spanish:
Regular and Spanish for Spanish Speakers; Includes music and general activities; Lessons are more about learning by doing.

General Math and Writing:
When a student does not like math, reading or writing, it is usually because they do not do it well. Why do they not do it well? Because usually they never learned it correctly in the first place!

The key is to make sure the student masters the basics. From there we can build up to more complex material. In general writing this includes correcting problem areas that many students have.

Tutoring for either school or enrichment will be tied back to school and/or work life situations.

Wishing you the very best in your educational endeavors.

Lydia

Reading

Reading

Reading is more than looking at words, it is processing the written word. We tend to think that both go together, but sometimes they don't. For example, the television reporter who was reading from her teleprompter: A man was shot and killed yesterday. He is in the hospital in critical condition, but is expected to recover. The reporter was so busy saying the words, that she did not process the message that a dead man will recover. We can read for meaning, to gather information or for pleasure. It does not matter why we read, we still need to process the written word. I help students ask themselves questions, compare what they are reading with what they know and/or draw a mental picture.

The way I teach English depends on the student. There will be emphasis on linguistics. Pronunciation is important and builds confidence in the student's speaking ability. We start where the student is at. I also check for common usage errors that might be present. The level of reading and writing will depend on the student's goals. If necessary, we will also figure out where the student can continue practicing English.

Writing

Writing

When I work with a student on writing, it is important to have a writing sample. Some of the most common areas that need work are: Similar words like, they're, their & there Run-on sentences and fragments have to do with expressing a complete thought. And of course, then there are essays. Common problem ares might be a solid and interesting introduction. Some students might want to use language that is more colorful and lively so as to draw in the reader. And finally there is the conclusion. A good conclusion wraps up the material and lets the reader know that this is the end. So in summary, usage, complete thoughts and correct form are all parts of good writing.
