About Amy

I am currently in the Masters program for ESL for Higher Education (University level) at the University of Minnesota. I also work at the University Center for Writing as a writing consultant.

I graduated from St. Mary's University of Minnesota in Winona, MN in 2010 with a degree in International Relations/Global Studies. I studied abroad in Shanghai, China during the spring of 2009 where I was inspired to teach and travel. After graduation from college I moved to Cartagena, Colombia to teach English as a Foreign Language for the Berlitz Language Institute for 5 months.

Along with loving my native language of English, I love to learn new languages and I can speak intermediate American Sign Language, intermediate Spanish, and beginning level Mandarin Chinese. For two years during college I was a language tutor and conversation partner for international students attending the De La Salle Language Institute at St. Mary's University. I have had the opportunity to work with students from China and Saudi Arabia by helping them with English concepts through worksheets, games, field trips, and story telling.

During graduate school I have both worked for the University of Minnesota's Student Writing Support as a writing consultant and also worked as a freelance writer for a medical organization. Collaborative writing is something I'm very passionate about; whether it's starting from scratch and brainstorming how to sequence ideas and find resources or it's proofreading a finished draft and discussing flow, citations, rhetorical choices, or grammar, I truly enjoy every aspect of the process of writing.

Working one on one to achieve English or writing goals is very meaningful and fun for me; I hope with my help it can be fun for you too.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I worked at Berlitz Language School in Colombia teaching English as a foreign language. I have many texts to use in helping students master English including those of Berlitz.

ESL/ESOL

I use a variety of tools including grammar worksheets, texts that stress fluency and common American usages, American accent specific lessons, games and interactive lessons to keep classes relevant and interesting.

Proofreading

I worked in the Writing Center for St. Mary's University of MN for one year helping other students generate ideas for papers or essays and helping to correct papers.

TOEFL

I volunteered at De La Salle Language Institute helping international students prepare to take the TOFL/TOEFL.

Writing

I have over two years of writing consultation experience at the University of Minnesota.

Good — The class is kind of interesting. I think Amy is a good teacher for me and she is good at how to make the student didn't feel bored and tired. Just some times, you will feel thirsty. ...
