Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have done ACT prep tutoring since 2008.

ACT English: My background is in languages, so I have a fascination with words and am a grammar geek. My proofreading skills make me a natural for helping students on this section.

Actual examples of my helping young people raise their ACT scores include: from 20 to 24, 24 to 27, and 27 to 30.

I am willing to map out a free DIY course of study for test prep. That way students can give it a shot on their own and only call a tutor in if they get stuck.

ACT Math

I have done ACT prep tutoring since 2008.

ACT Math: I have worked in the finance department of a school district for the last five years, exercising the math "side" of my brain after many years of teaching languages. My approach is especially effective with students for whom math is not a strength, because I can explain things from a different (less math-y) perspective.

Actual examples of my helping young people raise their ACT scores include: from 20 to 24, 24 to 27, and 27 to 30.

ACT Reading

I have done ACT prep tutoring since 2008.

ACT Reading: I was always an avid, but extremely slow, reader with good comprehension. When I was in high school, I raised my own ACT score just by learning some speed-reading skills. That experience, as well as knowledge of various reading approaches that can be tailored to the student, helps me effectively help students fine-tune their timing and accuracy.

ACT Science

I have done ACT prep tutoring since 2008.

ACT Science is as much about reading skills as it is about science, and you can see my ACT Reading qualifications for an idea of how some of that transfers. As the last section (save Writing) on the ACT, science can be the least predictable and harder to raise scores on because students are tired. I have years of experience helping students balance science progress with the other ACT sections.

French

Advanced speaker of French. Minnesota-licensed teacher of French grades 7-12. Experience teaching French to elementary age through adult, as well a beginners through high school French V and second semester college level. Lived near Versailles, France. Spent time at the Concordia Language Villages as a villager, a counselor, and a teacher. Skilled in TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Piano

I am an experienced pianist. I have played since I was seven and started teaching piano lessons when I was a teenager. As as teenager I had adult students who said I was better than other teachers they had had because I made them learn certain fundamentals. I was offered a scholarship for piano to Concordia College in Moorhead, MN (I turned down the scholarship because they offered me another, more valuable, academic scholarship). I continued to play piano and percussion and to sing through college, and I taught French and Spanish for many years, and now have a clerical day job, but music continues to be a meaningful part of my life.

Spanish

Intermediate-high speaker of Spanish. Minnesota-licensed teacher of French grades 7-12. I have also taught ESL & Spanish (levels I & II) on a variance in 4 different school districts. Experience teaching French to elementary age through adult, as well a beginners through high school French V and second semester college level. Lived near Versailles, France, as an au pair, working for a Franco-Argentinian family (so I was able to practice Spanish as well). Skilled in the TPRS Approach (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Emphasize language learning through reading, stories, movement, and music.
