Bio

As a teacher for the past 13 years, my experience is very broad. I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. I obtained my first teaching job in Phoenix, Arizona at a 6-12 grade charter school, servicing at-risk students. I worked here for three years before moving on to the public school system as a 4th, and later a 5th, grade classroom teacher. Then, the charter school that I originally worked for sought me out and asked me to come back as a center director for 130 students and 8 teachers. Although it was challenging, I truly loved this position. I could feel the difference I was making in the lives of these students. Many of these students graduated from high school with dreams and plans to include college. I have since become a mom and have moved back to my home state of Minnesota. I would love to stay connected to education and continue to help students reach their goals.

I hold a Master's Degree in Educational Curriculum and Instructional Technology from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. I feel my biggest strength as a teacher is being able to connect to students, to listen to their needs, consider their learning styles and what motivates them, develop a plan to improve the area of need, and -the best part- work directly with the student to implement that plan. I held an Arizona Teaching Certificate for 14 years, and I was considered Highly-Qualified in Mathematics at that time. My most recent experience, over the past 4 years, is with high school students and in all subjects. I have come to specialize somewhat in ACT prep. Additional strengths lie in Algebra, Geometry, Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Test Prep. I also have experience guiding students through the registration process for college, as well as applying for scholarships and government financial aid.

I would love to have the opportunity to meet you and discuss how I can be of service!

I have a BA in elementary education as well as a master's degree in educational curriculum and instructional technology. I have been a certified teacher for 13 years. Aside from my general full-time classroom responsibilities, I have also lead numerous after-school small-group tutoring sessions for students looking to focus on specific skills and study strategies. Although I am no longer a full-time classroom teacher, I continue to work with students on test preparation and study strategies. My most recent experience includes helping a student prepare for the high school ACT test, as well as reviewing a variety of mathematical concepts with a college student looking to score high on a program entrance exam. Through careful conversation, I have the ability to assess where students are experiencing a challenge in the content area. The student and I then discuss methods that can help them improve. Together, the student and I will develop strategies for organizing their materials, information, and notes. We will then determine a mode of "studying" that will best help them connect with the material to master it and experience success, i.e. create flashcards, practice tests, educational websites, etc.

Wonderful teacher, very helpful!

We have been extremely pleased with Kate’s work with our daughter. She will take the ACT test this Saturday and she feels very prepared. We are so excited for her, rather than nervous, like previous times. Our daughter’s confidence in her testing ability has soared after working with Kate over the past month. I would recommend her to anyone looking to improve their score. Thank you so much, Kate!

Excellent Resource for ACT tutor

Kate worked with my son for two months in preparation for his ACT test with focus on the Reading and English areas. My son took several practice tests and then they would review his results and learn why he got the answers were incorrect. My son who is working towards a guaranteed scholarship which requires a high ACT score found this very beneficial. To-date his scores have increased 3 points.

A real gem

My son has had 2 lessons with Kate so far in preparing for his upcoming ACT. She has been great to work with. She has proven to be dependable, knowledgeable and seems to know just how to relate with her students to make the most impact out of the time spent. My son is self motivated and it seems that we have found a real gem in Kate. Hoping for excellent results come exam time.

Excellent resource and comfortable personality

Kate was able to quickly make a connection with our son and made in feel very comfortable with the process. She provided great options for learning and put together a plan that will help our son through the process of studying for his ACT. The importance of the test and the overwhelming amount of material makes studying for the ACT daunting and Kate is helping to make the study process fun and manageable. Thanks Kate!!

Kind, caring, and knowledgeable!

Our first session with Kate was great. She could relate to my son and my son felt she knew exactly how he was feeling. She was comforting explaining that his situation is normal and common. They made progress, even the first night. Kate is great!

Very impressed!

We decided to hire a tutor to help one of our children with Geometry. Kate was our first choice, and we were extremely impressed and pleased with her ability to help. Kate is extremely patient and cares about the student. She was clear in communicating what needed to happen, but in a gentle way. Kate is very knowledgeable and able to help the student understand the concepts, meeting them where they are. She is also willing to do her best to work with your schedule. We loved having her as a tutor and would highly recommend her!
