Duke University (Biology)
University of Virginia (Master's)
I hold a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Duke University, as well as an M.S. in Pharmacology from the University of Virginia. During my time as a student, I was also a tutor in the Biochemistry department and a teaching assistant in the Chemistry department. I taught a recitation session and guided students through problem sets that applied the knowledge they learned in lectures. I am passionate about helping students learn to think critically. I believe in teaching the process, not just the answers, so that students can succeed after they complete their homework or test. We will work through concepts as we complete problem sets, and I will give periodic evaluations to gauge the student's progress and understanding of the big picture.
I was a successful AP Calculus student in high school and continued to use upper-level math throughout my science studies in college and graduate school. I have a strong math background as well as application experience, so I can help students understand the usefulness of math in their future careers or just everyday life. Additionally, in my undergraduate and graduate work, I used biology, biochemistry, genetics, and chemistry concepts everyday as a I conducted research in a laboratory for my thesis and was a Chemistry and Biochemistry tutor at both universities.
Respect for others' time, planning, and time management are all important life skills, but I do realize life happens. Therefore I have an 8-hour cancellation policy and offer make-up sessions. If cancellations are made 2-8 hours prior to the scheduled lesson, a 50% lesson fee will be charged. If you are a no show or cancel within 2 hours of the lesson, I will assess the entire session fee.
I look forward to working with your student and helping them learn to love biology, chemistry, and math!

My son needed a help with honor biology that had been confused on some of the topics. Kristen has helped him to clarify these confusions. My son said she is very knowledgeable and very good of explaining in a way that is easy to understand. She is also very quick response when we tried to set up the lessons. We are glad that we found her and we are certain that will go with her again when we need more help. Thanks Kristen!
I am very happy with Kristen's tutoring for my daughter. She takes extra care and ensures good understanding of the material. She looks at special needs of the student and works extensively to ensure their success. Highly recommend Kristen!
We are using Kristen for ACT help. She was super attentive and very quick to respond. Love that she was flexible on the meeting location. Would definitely recommend her to a friend.
Kristen did a great job at connecting with my son and setting up realistic goals towards a successful ACT testing. Thank you for caring and being passionate about teaching.
Kristen worked with my daughter tutoring her in geometry. My daughter has struggled in math her entire life and has always needed additional help at some point during her classes. Kristen made my daughter feel very comfortable asking questions and breaking down the subject in a way that helped my daughter understand it fully. She is very patient and creative in her teaching process. This year we are going to use Kristen again to assist with maintaining my daughters grades in math throughout the year! I highly recommend her as she has done a great job building confidence in my daughter when she takes tests and completes homework assignments! Worth every penny!
Thank you, thank you for working with Ryan and getting him caught up on his work. I really appreciate all you've done getting him caught up on his work.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I scored in the top percentile on the ACT. Additionally, I have completed up through advanced Calculus in my courses, so I have a strong math background. I have researched changes to the ACT over the years and prepared a curriculum for teaching ACT Math. Each student will be evaluated and given a customized plan based on this curriculum.
I tutor fundamental math to calculus. I have completed coursework up through multi variable calculus.
I hold a minor in Chemistry from Duke University. Additionally, I have completed graduate-level biochemistry courses.
