I was the advisor to our schools Mathematics Team which competed in a regional competition at Bemidji State College each Spring! I was also advisor to our Bridge Building team which competed at UMD Bridge Building competition! As a high school teacher I also coached boys swimming, boys basketball, girls basketball, girls fastpitch softball, and boys football. I would stay after school or come in early mornings to tutor students who needed extra help! I started a Math Clinic during my planning period to assist students who needed a little extra help!
I tried to make the math subject I was teaching a real life event! I would try to show students real life applications in the real world as to how math could be used! I had my own roofing company for 56 years and actually had students work with me on a roof they had to calculate the number of squares of shingles and tar paper and pounds of nails on a job1 In Geometry students had to calculate the cost of a new driveway..cubic yards of concrete, they had to calculate the cost of painting or paneling their bedroom..square feet of paneling or gallons of paint! In Geometry class and Technical Math class I would have the local lumber yard supply us with 2X 4's and we would construct a wall..parallel lines and right triangles..also learned how to use all of markings on a carpenters square...had to build a staircase. Lots of practical math!
I have had many students come to my location for tutoring, I have all the supplies we would need at my home. I am willing and have done homebound tutoring but prefer my own home if possible! I have a great deal of patience and try
