Hi! I've been tutoring and helping students edit academic papers for over 10 years now. For all my lessons, I keep detailed notes about what we cover at each lesson so I can be sure to review key information as well as avoid being repetitive when it isn't necessary. I come to my lessons prepared with an agenda and materials in a folder specific to each student so I can maximize the use of our time.

My full-time job is teaching English as a second language in a public elementary school to students ages 5-12. I have also been tutoring adults in ESL, both in Japan and in Minnesota, for over 10 years. A typical ESL lesson with me would cover speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar practice. Of course I would tailor it to your particular needs. I have many, many books and materials to pull from for teaching ESL to both children and adults. I'm comfortable teaching students who are brand new to English as well as very advanced ESL students.

I also really enjoy helping students prepare for the ACT test. The areas I specialize in are the reading test, writing test, and English test. I am very familiar with the format of these tests, time allotted, and strategies required for students to perform well on the tests given the strict time constraints. I help students learn their own strengths and weaknesses, then help them develop test-taking strategies based on their strengths and weaknesses. I can help students identify which types of questions they struggle with, and teach lessons focusing on strengthening their skills in those areas. For the writing test, I help students develop a skeleton essay that they can use to form a strong essay response no matter what the question.

Lastly, I love tutoring both children and adults in writing or working as an editor for high school students, college students, and adults. I've done everything from teach

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL for about 10 years. I taught ESL to Japanese students in public schools in Japan for three years, and have been teaching ESL to elementary school students in Minnesota for five years. I also have been tutoring adults in ESL for about 10 years. I understand the importance of learning English through practice with speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I have many, many materials to focus on each of those areas. I earned a K-12 Minnesota teaching license through my coursework at the University of Minnesota in 2006, and I also earned a master's degree in Education at that time.

Grammar

My undergraduate degree was in print journalism, so I took a lot of classes in grammar, writing, and editing. Then I worked for various newspapers as both a reporter and as a news editor for over five years, which helped me become even more familiar with grammar and common mistakes. Finally, I went to graduate school for an ESL teaching license and a master's degree in education. Once again, I had many classes covering grammar and writing. Now I work full-time as an ESL teacher and teach grammar to my students on a daily basis.

Proofreading

My undergraduate degree is in print journalism, so during my college coursework, I took several classes on what to look for when editing articles or papers. I became very familiar with the most used style guides. I worked as an editor for my university's student newspaper and for Eau Claire, Wisconsin's daily newspaper, The Leader Telegram. I also spent two years working as a writer and editor for the St. Paul School District. After that, I earned a master's degree in Education and an ESL teaching license from the University of Minnesota, which again introduced me to classes on editing student work. I have about 15 years of experience editing work such as letters of recommendation, personal statements, papers for college coursework, resumes, cover letters, handbooks, and newspaper articles.

I have helped many students prepare for the ACT English test. I'm very familiar with the format of the test, the types of questions, and the time students need to spend on each passage and each question in order to finish under the tight time constraints. I can help students come up with strategies that work for them, as well as help students strengthen their skills on the types of questions that are difficult for them. Typically, I start by looking over some practice tests with the student (I can provide these if you do not have a practice book), identify the types of questions that are difficult for the student, then prepare lessons to work on those areas of grammar. I also help the student develop appropriate study skills and strategies so the student can do his or her best on the exam.

I've been helping students study for the ACT Reading test for a couple of years. I'm very familiar with the test format, types of questions, content of the passages, and strategies required to complete the test in the limited amount of time. Great coaching and very flexible with time.

Becky helped our son with an advanced HS writing course: she was able to coach him through the writing process on several occasions, helping him look for ways to improve his essays, and making him rethink or defend his choices. Altogether it made him more thoughtful and thorough about what he was writing and why, and through that he was better prepared with each exercise. She never told him what to write, but asked him a lot of questions and asked for clarification, which is why I used the word "Coach" very specifically. Becky met with our son one-to-one for a first meeting, and thereafter met with him online, where they would use Google Docs and other internet services to communicate and exchange ideas. This worked extremely well and made the most efficient use of their time, also allowing for short-notice assistance, which was often needed because of the pace of the particular class. I would recommend Becky highly, and we will use her services again if needed.

Very Professional!

I revised my personal statement for grad school a million times and was stuck trying to make it sound more professional yet personal. Becky really helped me get my words across. She is extremely prompt and also guides you in the right direction. She also isn't afraid to give her opinion if she feels something does not makes sense. I highly recommend her!

Right on target!

My son needed help with reading and general test taking. Reading is such an essential part to the overall test, and Becky was able to zero in right away with the areas he needed to focus in on.I felt it was important to stay out of the process and let my son achieve his own results. Although each lesson was private, I was still able to know what the lesson was about, what he had achieved and if he was finishing his homework. Becky always had detailed feedback to each lesson. Becky even helped him with exercises to help ease anxiety over test taking. My son was so excited after finishing his ACT that he actually can't wait for his results. I know what he has learned will help carry through into college as well.

Fantastic subject knowledge! Very Dependable!

I find Becky to be very flexible and possesses deep subject matter expertise. She quickly understood our request and was thorough in checking the background information before giving us guidance. Her coaching was focused on weak areas and to the point. I highly recommend Becky as a tutor. I would not hesitate to use her expertise again.

Great Tutor

Becky has done a great job in tutoring my son for ACT reading and comprehension. His scores have improved. Given that she had tutored him at a very short notice and just a few weeks prior to the test, I can say that her material and her method of teaching were beneficial. Becky was very accommodating with her timings. She taught during weekends and holidays just because we needed it. That showed that she took her tutoring seriously and understood the need of the student. She came prepared for the classes. I would definitely recommend her for tutoring.
