Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a Special Educator for the past 11 years, I have experience with students of all ages and abilities. I have been a Teacher and Case Manager for students with a variety of disabilities including a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD.

I am aware of the learning issues that accompany this diagnosis as well as learning strategies to build skills of focus and organization. Most importantly, I assist students to follow-through with assignment completion.

Aspergers

As a Special Educator, I have served students with Aspergers ranging from Preschool to Adult. I have worked with students who are verbal and non-verbal, using sign language and picture boards. I have experience teaching academic and social skills as well as managing behavioral issues. I enjoy helping students become independent and able to ask for help when needed. My experience has taught me to learn about each student as an individual before deciding what strategies will work best.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a K-12 licensed teacher and have tutored several elementary students. Specifically I worked with students with disabilities and who are at risk of failing in school. I understand the attention span and high energy level that elementary students bring to the classroom. I have patience and a positive attitude to offer while teaching basic academic skills of reading, writing, and math. I emphasize students learn to work as independently as possible given their age and ability.

Phonics

As a Special Educator, my strengths include reading and writing skills and strategies. I am able to help students of all ages and abilities learn to sound out letters, sound combinations, and words. I have taught word skills such as rhyme, blended consonants, and silent letter combinations. Through practice and repetition, I have been successful with elementary and secondary students. Also, I am competent at understanding a student's difficulty and working in that specific area to improve those skills.

Public Speaking

As a Special Education teacher and Debate Coach, I have been able to work with students on a spectrum from non-verbal to inappropriate speech. I helped students gain control and focus on their speech needs by guiding them in what to say and how to say it. I am able to help students stop and think while they plan and prepare to speak. I have assisted students to give speeches and presentations in addition to arguments for debate tournaments. By organizing and practicing, I help students gain confidence in their public speaking abilities.

Special Needs

As a special educator for the past 10 years, I have worked with students of all ages (K-12) with a variety of abilities and disabilities. I am knowledgeable in the special education process and understand the complexities of students with special needs. I am able to identify specific learning issues and work toward skills and strategies that allow students to make progress.

Study Skills

As a K-12 teacher and Special Educator, I have had many years' experience helping students improve their study skills. I have taught strategies for organization, memory, and time management. I encourage students to use visual aids like daily planners and graphic organizers. Also, I use a variety of mental exercises to increase their processing speed.
My teaching experience has proven that I can help students make progress with these methods. In addition, I follow up to check that they are on track and complete assignments on time.

Very patient tutor.

Ruth was able to convey reading and testing strategies to my son. He is testing (in reviews) at a 90% level. My son also has developed writing techniques for the writing portion of the ACT. With Ruth's help, my son is now able to approach the ACT with confidence instead of fear. He knows what is expected for the writing exam, and is looking forward to the exam.
