College of St. Catherine (Elementary Education)
My teaching career began in a rural, Parochial School in Southern Minnesota. I taught a combination classroom of 6th-7th-8th grade (yes, three grades...one classroom...all subjects) for two years and then transitioned to the Kindergarten-1st-2nd grade classroom for an additional two years. It was in this school setting that I learned the art of flexibility, patience, resilience, organization, and dedication. After the birth of my son, my educational journey led to Migrant Head Start, where I worked for two years as the Center Director. My responsibilities included Family Services, Community Engagement, and birth-to-5 educational curriculum. My work as a Center Director challenged me professionally, and ultimately, developed, defined, and strengthened my leadership skills.
In 2010, I began my teaching career at NRHEG Elementary School in Ellendale, Minnesota as a Reading Recovery teacher and the Title One Coordinator and Lead Teacher. I am equipped with 5 years of literacy intervention experience with first grade readers (Reading Recovery), 6 years experience as the Title One Coordinator and Lead Teacher, and 3 years experience as the Literacy Coach for both the Preschool and K-3 Minnesota Reading Corp programs at NRHEG. Currently, I am in my second year of teaching "Bridges", an Alternative Kindergarten program that I initiated, developed, and implemented at NRHEG the Fall of 2015. I am also NRHEG's Targeted Services Coordinator for "Power Hour" (after-school program), as well as, "Panther Power Up" (summer school program) serving students Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Throughout my 11 years of teaching, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with students of a variety of ages, supporting young readers and mathematicians, building confidence within each one, and learning from my students. I have been blessed with, and sought out, educational opportunities that are diverse and unique. Whether working directly teaching students, or developing and implementing programs to meet their diverse needs, I have kept the following words of wisdom at the forefront of my mind and embedded in my efforts. "Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way." and "Highlight my strengths and my weaknesses will disappear."
I will apply this same educational philosophy as I work diligently to support your child's academic growth, stir their learning curiosity, build resilience, and nurture their confidence. I look forward to embarking on this journey together! My teaching career began in a rural, Parochial School in Southern Minnesota. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
