I'm Leah! I recently graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Toxicology while living on a diet of pizza (courtesy of the pizza shop where I worked) and large amounts of caffeine. Although the journey was difficult, my fondest memories were teaching my classmates and my friends, as well as anyone who would listen, the wonders of science, math, Russian, and anything else I found interesting at the time; I quickly learned that the best way to study was to teach someone else the topic. It didn't feel like a gory process but rather an adventure we both took where we each received clarification. If someone is willing, they can learn anything.

I grew up in a Russian speaking household, and from a young age, I had been attending Russian school to help me improve my reading and writing abilities. I won't lie, and say I loved spending my Saturdays confined to a classroom taking exams on the different cases but now that I'm older, that discipline helped me as a student in college and, now as a working woman. By the time I started tenth grade, I became more of a substitute teacher, rather than a student, for the elementary level classes, and I would spend my summers working at a Russian camp before I left for college. Although my students learned the language from me, they taught me the best way to teach someone a foreign language, and later, the best way to teach. I continued tutoring (Russian) through college, and I worked as a nanny for a Russian speaking family where I spoke only Russian to the kids as well as helped them with their own Russian school homework.

Tutoring math was something I fell into in college. It started with me helping friends and acquaintances with their homework, and they would ask me to spend an afternoon with them to go over a topic they were having trouble understanding. I would stay with them until I knew for sure they were understanding the material and would always be willing to spend extra days with them to make sure they had no other questions. Eventually, in exchange for food or Starbucks drinks, I would help my coworkers' (from the same pizza shop but you can't eat pizza every day) kids with their math homework.

Sometimes, having that one on one with someone takes off the pressure of failing. When there aren't 20 different pairs of eyes staring at you as you answer a question, you find that you know a lot more than you think you do. It's not just about teaching a subject or explaining it differently; it's about showing someone that it's okay to get a wrong answer, and it's okay to fail (trust me). You jut have to have the confidence to own up to the mistake and learn from it.

I'm young, and I've been through all of the ups and downs of failing and not understanding something. It's okay to not understand; I'm here to help and add some clarification. Just let me know what I can do.

Sat in on 10th grade math lesson, Leah did a great job explaining everything. Good job! Definitely will recommend Leah as a tutor for math and science. She's helping my daughter with her homework.
