About Kristi

Creating music is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a person can have! Working with students is a passion of mine and I always look for ways to integrate topics like composition, improvisation, and musical games into my lessons and tutoring sessions.

I have developed my teaching methodology during my time at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN where I earned my Bachelor of Music, and at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH where I earned my Master of Music. During that time, I worked with students of all ages providing lessons in composition, theory, voice, and piano instruction.

I offer flexible hours and am willing to travel to meet you. My rate is $50 per hour online or in person. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I earned my Bachelor of Music degree at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN with an emphasis on music theory and composition in 2014. I recently graduated in the spring of 2016 with my Master's degree in Music Composition from Bowling Green State University. I am an active contemporary composer and aspire to continue my studies in a Ph.D. program beginning Fall 2017 or 2018.

Ear Training

During my time at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN where I earned my Bachelor of Music, and at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH where I earned my Master of Music, I developed my teaching methodology of ear training or aural skills. I tutored multiple groups of students in both institutions on subjects pertaining to elementary ear training techniques along with very advanced techniques. I tutored at Concordia College from 2012-2014 and at Bowling Green State University from 2014-2016.

General Music

Having studied music for the majority of my life (beginning at age 5), I have a very good grasp on general music knowledge spanning from music theory to music history. I hold two degrees in music, a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and a Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. I plan on continuing my education by pursuing a Ph.D. in Music in the next five years.

Music History

Having studied music in an academic institution, I have had many courses focusing music history covering the beginnings of Western music all the way up to what is happening now in the contemporary world of Western music. I have approached the study of music history from multiple angles and perspectives, looking at it not only through historical and musical contexts but also through philosophical and theoretical concepts. I specialize in 20th and 21st century music history knowledge.

Piano

I have studied piano for 18 years, 4 of which were at Concordia College in Moorhead MN, and 1 of which was at Bowling Green State University. As a music major, I had to pass a piano proficiency exam in order to graduate which included sight reading, improvisation, harmonization, and scale form knowledge. I am currently a private piano instructor for elementary aged children at the St. Paul Academy and Summit School. Working with younger students especially is a passion of mine and I always look for ways to integrate topics like composition, improvisation, and musical games into my lessons.

Sight Singing

Having studied music for 6 years and receiving two degrees, I have had much experience with sight singing. For my Bachelor's degree, I had to take aural skills courses which included a sight singing component. In addition, I have been singing both solo and in choirs since I was in 4th grade. A large part of which included sight singing both in the choral setting and for auditions.

Songwriting

I have been studying composition in an academic institution for 6 years. I have been writing my own music since as early as I can remember. Songwriting is a fun and challenging hobby that can be difficult especially if you aren't familiar with writing music in general. I can teach you about chords and how to successfully set lyrics to music in ways that will both sound good and make sense musically.

Voice (Music)

I have studied voice as a soprano in a studio setting for 6 years. During my time at Concordia College in Moorhead MN I began my studies as a Vocal Music Education Major before switching to composition. As a result I have taken language, diction, literature, and pedagogy courses relating specifically to vocal music. I have sang in a choral setting for almost my entire life. I began my singing career as a participant in a city wide children's choir called All City Children's Chorus in Cheyenne, WY. I sang all through high school in both solo and choral settings. I have been very active as a vocalist throughout my college career, most recently singing in an 8 voice chamber group specializing in Early Music at Bowling Green State University.
