About Jon

I have been in the education field for over 7 years, teaching English to Chinese students of various ages at Foshan University and other training centers in southern China. I've written and taught my own lesson plans for numerous courses, designed challenging tests and creative homework ideas that resulted in improved student test scores for language majors, and managed a school of 60+ students in my own language training center in China.
I’ve not only been a teacher of secondary languages, but also a student of several as well. After learning basic Chinese at the University of Minnesota, I graduated and further improved my Chinese proficiency while living and teaching in China. I've studied Mandarin and Cantonese rigorously and can speak and read Chinese with near fluent proficiency. I've also studied Japanese in Ibaraki, Japan and can speak/read/write with minor proficiency for students interested in learning Japanese.

Because of my extensive time spent in China, I have not only learned the basic skills of communicating in Mandarin and Cantonese but also understand the cultural nuances that are necessary to fully comprehend the Chinese language. From idioms and slang to translating difficult phrases, my students are provided lessons with deeper meaning and better language retention whether it be a Chinese student learning English or an English speaker learning Chinese.

I have helped middle school, high school and college English majors prepare for exams including TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT, TEM4/8, CET4/6, Business English (BEC), and other language-related tests both written and oral. My students pass their tests with confidence and go on to succeed in the school they wish to enroll in.

Languages are my life, and my passion translates to effective language training. Learning a language will not only expand your world, but also become a bridge to connecting with different people. If you have a desire to learn a second language and the commitment to improving through practice, schedule a lesson with me and achieve the fluency you've dreamed of!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have several years' experience preparing high school students for the ACT. My students have scored very well (30+ out of 36) by not only focusing on improving their reading and writing skills, but also learning how to approach the ACT test questions and section time limits. Along with my four year liberal arts degree, I also have a well-rounded education background in English, math and problem solving. I studied AP English, AP Calculus and AP Physics in high school, and scored a 31 on the ACT. With practice, I'm confident you will be able to solve any questions on upcoming ACT exams.

ACT Math

ACT Math can be a difficult section for those who don't do well in math or take too long to answer each question. Although I studied AP Calculus in high school, I remember how difficult it was to finish the ACT math section on time until I learned how to examine each question carefully and speed up my problem solving. I have helped many students learn the basic test-related skills and formulas to solve most problems on the ACT. With practice, my techniques will help you understand and solve questions faster, improve your confidence and boost your score on the math section as well as other parts of the exam. You will improve in time, and I'll show you how!

ACT Reading

I have several years experience preparing high school students for the ACT. My students have scored very well (30+ out of 36) by not only focusing on improving their reading and writing skills, but also learning how to approach the ACT test questions and section time limits. Along with my four year liberal arts degree, I also have a well-rounded education background in English, math and problem solving. Chinese

I've studied Chinese for nearly ten years, beginning in 2006 at the University of Minnesota, and later while living and teaching in Foshan, China. I regularly speak, read and type in Chinese with friends and family, and continue to communicate in Chinese at home with my wife (a native Chinese speaker).
I have taught survival Chinese to students and adults traveling in China for study abroad programs and have tutored families in the US in basic Pinyin and simple phrases. Lessons in Chinese are based on a step-by-step process of listening, speaking, reading and writing with gradual increase in difficulty. I've designed my own teaching materials and methods which focus on a blend of basic fundamentals while supplementing vocabulary that each student is interested in learning.

English

My teaching experience mainly focuses on English, especially teaching ESL students and helping students preparing for exams like the ACT, SAT, SSAT, IELTS, TOEFL and other standardized placement tests. In addition to obtaining a BA in Politics at the University of Minnesota, I also have a well-rounded education background in English, math and problem solving. I studied AP English, AP Civics, AP Calculus and AP Physics in high school, and I'm familiar with the standards of Advanced Placement writing classes. With practice, I'm confident you will be able to solve any questions on upcoming exams. If you're interested in starting soon, please contact me!

ESL/ESOL

Having spent nearly eight years living and teaching abroad in China, I understand the difficulties non-native speakers face when learning a second language. I've taught English to students planning to study in the U.S. as well as recent U.S. immigrants who need help in their studies. By focusing on what students want to achieve (higher test scores, faster reading comprehension, better understanding of American culture, communicating like a native English speaker), I apply my experience and skills to help them reach their goals.

IELTS

I have tutored Chinese high school students applying for universities in the U.S. which require passing an IELTS exam. In addition to helping them with practice tests, I gave graded writing assignments and prepared them for the oral exam and interview. Students I've taught have received high scores in IELTS (6-9 out of a possible 9) and enrolled in their chosen colleges in California, Chicago and New York.
