Hi, I’m Mona! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Elementary Education with concentrations in Social Studies and Science. Hi, I’m Mona! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Elementary Education with concentrations in Social Studies and Science. I hold a K-6 teaching license in Minnesota. My first teaching position was at a private school in the middle of the desert near Mesa, Arizona. I was so glad my career began there. Not only was I enjoying my class of very talented first graders, but the school provided additional training in a reading and spelling method which I have used extensively in my teaching career over the years. Traveling back to Minnesota (where my husband is from) years later, I introduced this teaching method to our local elementary school teachers and they requested a licensed trainer to come to their district to teach them. Soon teachers in five elementary schools were using the method and saw great improvement in the speed at which the students could learn spelling and reading successfully. I tutor children using this same method and see the same results.

I enjoy taking the frustration out of learning to read and spell the English language by breaking down the language into more manageable parts. Helping children sort out the jumble of letters and groups of words into something that makes sense to them is very rewarding for me. Learning the secrets of the English language can be fun and I love the challenge of engaging every child in this adventure. Reading well can open their minds up to many interesting adventures in books and spelling well can help them communicate their thoughts and ideas well as they proceed through middle and high school. More importantly, I help children gain confidence in themselves and in their ability to learn. One of my tutoring students won an award for the most improved student in his middle school class for the year! Not only was I proud of him, so were his parents and the smile on his face said it all!

One of the important keys to success in teaching reading with the Spalding Method is teaching correct and clear formation of each of the letters, whether it is printing or cursive. Precise and clear teaching and close review of the students' work is necessary for children to not only read what they write but allows that learning to transfer to reading printed books. There is very little transfer of learning from writing to reading with sloppy handwriting or incorrectly formed letters. Correct handwriting, from posture to pencil position and pressure is taught from the first lesson.

In 1982-83, I took a Developmental Reading class and a Spalding I class from Arizona State University to obtain my Arizona teaching license. I began using the Spalding Method immediately in my first grade classroom. In 1997, I introduced the Spalding Method to the local school district in Bemidji, Minnesota, and many teachers in five of the local elementary schools elected to become formally trained in the method over the next several years. They saw such success in reading, writing and spelling in their classrooms that they had a licensed Spalding Instructor teach the method over the summers. I took the class again myself in 1997. Phonemic awareness and systematic phonics instruction is at the core of this method. It brings success and confidence within reach to EVERY student!

Lessons are modified for each student at their particular level and pace for learning and a splash of fun is added to make time fly for them. I use a multi-sensory approach which uses four pathways to the brain -- sure to hit every child's strong learning style. Students with ADHD and other special needs learn these tools easily as well. Spelling becomes a game of thinking and analyzing -- but they don't know it because it's fun and designed for their particular needs and learning styles.

It's amazing how many words students can understand and read when they have an understanding of basic roots to the language. However, it doesn't have to be boring -- there are so many activities and games that can be used to build vocabulary to enhance reading comprehension.

I have three sons with ADD/ADHD and watched their struggles with the typical classroom styles of teaching. I have it myself and know the weaknesses and strengths of these characteristics. I can help them get past the struggles by being creative with teaching/learning modalities.
