About Mona

I enjoy taking the frustration out of learning to read and spell the English language through systematic phonics, handwriting and comprehension instruction along with oral vocabulary enrichment through common Greek and Latin roots. Learning is fun when it makes sense and helping children sort out the jumble of letters and groups of words into something that makes sense to them is very rewarding for me. I am enthusiastic and fun in my approach and can keep even the most inattentive student interested through being sensitive to their moods, interests and ability levels. I have had three sons with ADD and ADHD and know first-hand about stumbling blocks to learning in the typical classroom environment. But learning can be enjoyable and interesting and I love the challenge of engaging every child in this adventure -- because reading well can open their minds up to many more interesting adventures in books!

I have been trained in the Spalding Writing Road to Reading method of teaching and have found great success in the general classroom setting and with special education students. I have been a licensed elementary teacher since 1982 and have used it throughout my teaching career from Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

If parents are interested and willing, I provide easy materials and short assignments to do with their child between sessions. This keeps learning moving forward and when parents are interested in their child's learning, it naturally becomes more important to the child as most children want to please their parents. Many students look forward to showing their parents what they have learned in these little five-minute review sessions. More and more self-confidence builds and they begin to try things they didn't think they could do before.

I try to be flexible with scheduling. If at all possible, I can often reschedule a makeup class.

To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I have a tutoring office near downtown Bemidji.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your son or daughter achieve success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

The method I use, Spalding Writing Road to Reading, has been used with dyslexic students with great success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Minnesota K-6 teaching license.

Elementary Math

I have taken graduate credit hours in Elementary Math Materials as well as three undergraduate courses in Math Methods and have taught 5th and 6th grade math to those needing remediation at a Hmong school in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Handwriting

One of the important keys to success in teaching reading with the Spalding Method is teaching correct and clear formation of each of the letters, whether it is printing or cursive. Precise and clear teaching and close review of the students' work is necessary for children to not only read what they write but allows that learning to transfer to reading printed books. There is very little transfer of learning from writing to reading with sloppy handwriting or incorrectly formed letters. Correct handwriting, from posture to pencil position and pressure is taught from the first lesson.

Phonics

In 1982-83, I took a Developmental Reading class and a Spalding I class from Arizona State University to obtain my Arizona teaching license. I began using the Spalding Method immediately in my first grade classroom. In 1997, I introduced the Spalding Method to the local school district in Bemidji, Minnesota, and many teachers in five of the local elementary schools elected to become formally trained in the method over the next several years. They saw such success in reading, writing and spelling in their classrooms that they had a licensed Spalding Instructor teach the method over the summers. I took the class again myself in 1997. Phonemic awareness and systematic phonics instruction is at the core of this method. It brings success and confidence within reach to EVERY student!

Reading

I love to read and enjoy passing that passion on to students. From phonics lessons in beginning reading to practicing for fluency and comprehension and vocabulary development. I have a passion to give students the tools to become lifelong learners through the enjoyment of reading. It doesn't have to be a chore. Good books and good tools to learn are key.

Spelling

Spelling makes sense when students are given the basic tools of the English language: 70 phonograms and 29 spelling rules. No, it doesn't have to be boring to learn them. Lessons are modified for each student at their particular level and pace for learning and a splash of fun is added to make time fly for them. I use a multi-sensory approach which uses four pathways to the brain -- sure to hit every child's strong learning style. Students with ADHD and other special needs learn these tools easily as well. Spelling becomes a game of thinking and analyzing -- but they don't know it because it's fun and designed for their particular needs and learning styles.

Study Skills

I enjoy teaching students how to use four pathways into the brain while studying various subjects to enhance and speed up learning. I also have other tools to share which helps them organize their thoughts into well-formed sentences and into their memory where it can be recalled easily.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary building can be fun and interesting. One of the areas I enjoy teaching involves introducing Greek and Latin roots which are the building blocks of the English language. It's amazing how many words students can understand and read when they have an understanding of basic roots to the language. Knowing these root words also makes medical and scientific terminology a breeze in high school and college courses!
However, it doesn't have to be boring -- there are so many activities and games that can be used to build vocabulary to enhance reading comprehension.

Writing

From teaching penmanship in printing and cursive to composing sentences, paragraphs and essays, I have taught writing/handwriting for many years. I break it down into easily understood and manageable parts then build at the student's pace. Writing should flow as easily as thinking.
