Bemidji State University, Bemidji, MN (MathAccountFinance)
Hello potential students:
My "professional" passions are math and business-type subjects because I enjoy numbers! Also, I simply enjoy learning!!! In fact, I recently graduated from Bemidji State University (BSU) with a B.S. in Accounting and Business Administration - Finance Emphasis in May 2013 (to go along with my B.S. Mathematics back in 1997 from BSU). This Fall Semester 2014, I took a couple of "refresher" classes (i.e., Calculus and Discrete Mathematics) just for fun.
For most of my working-career (1997-2010), I have served the role of a "construction/cost estimator" for a family-owned commercial construction company specializing in metal stud framing systems and drywall/plaster/stucco wall/ceiling assemblies. I considered it a great challenge since I started the job not knowing anything about construction. The experience showed me things that seem impossible at first are indeed possible if you give them time and apply hard work at them.
My short-term goal is to participate in Bemidji State University's Master Of Business Administration (MBA) program; however, I've been out of the workforce (via form of steady, full-time employment) since the end of 2010; thus, my first priority has to be getting a full-time job so I can afford to enter the MBA at BSU. Who knows... my longer-term goal may be to teach Mathematics at a high school level somewhere.
My tutoring experience consists of teaching undergraduate college-level students coursework in "Operations Management" along with "Principles of Accounting". I would very much like to tutor students in Algebra/Trigonometry/Calculus as well since - as stated above - I have recently "refreshed" in a couple of math classes and I am a former Mathematics major.
My approach to tutoring is reflected by my philosophy in learning: that is, make the student run through the problems and - by all means - do NOT do the work for them. Certainly, I will give "hints" along the way towards working through exercises/problems; however, I will not simply do the work (from start to finish) for the student because - as we all know - learning is best fostered via "trial and error" by the student. My tutoring also reflects the fact that I like to run through lots of examples that "mirror" the exercises/problems the students are having trouble solving. I feel this is an effective method of getting the students to assimilate and establish connections to the ideas and materials we are covering.
With regards to the specifics of tutoring, I do ask of you the following requests:
*Please provide a 24-hour notice for appointment cancellation.
*We are to conduct our tutoring sessions at a "public" place in the town of Bemidji somewhere (e.g., any of an assortment of coffee shops to choose from, Bemidji Public Library, Library at Bemidji State University, etc...).
*Come prepared with your textbook, calculator, and writing materials. I will always come with a calculator, writing materials, and perhaps some "reference" materials (i.e., college textbook pertaining to the subject I am tutoring).
I take learning seriously, and I hope you will as well. I enjoy putting in hard work and seeing progress (via improved grades and knowledge/understanding of subjects being tutored) before my very eyes!
Thanks, and I hope to tutor many aspiring learners very soon!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I just completed a 1-semester course at the undergraduate level at Bemidji State University this Fall Semester 2014 in Discrete Mathematics & received an "A" in the course. Topics included are as follows: (1) Sets & Relations, (2) Graph Theory, (3) Trees, (4) Counting Techniques, (5) Logic & Proofs.
