About Mary

I am a licensed Spanish teacher, with a lot of experience using Spanish in the real world. After high school, I spent a year in Ecuador as an AFS exchange student. I began studying music at college and then changed to Spanish and Secondary Education with a minor in French. Throughout my career I have taught all ages, from preschool to retirees, using published textbooks and language tools I designed myself. I have used Spanish (and French) in export, sales, customer service, not-for-profit outreach services, translation and interpretation, and travel. I married into a Mexican family so I get to practice their dialect of Spanish all the time!

I also have experience teaching English to non-English speakers, helping many to prepare for the GED and other language proficiency tests. And let's face it: most people who want to learn English HAVE to learn it, for school or work, so I take it as seriously as you do! I can help you source books and other resources, too.

Learning a second language is a challenge but with the right study habits and plenty of practice with a native speaker like me, you CAN learn and do well! Let me help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have helped many people to improve their English, with Literacy Volunteers of America and an Hispanic outreach center where I worked. From absolute beginners to those who had studied English, I have helped young people and adults prepare for the GED and other proficiency exams.

As a Spanish and French speaker, I understand how challenging learning another language can be. I have lived abroad, traveled extensively and have known people from every corner of the world, and so I am quite sensitive to the differences between cultures. I feel this is important to establish a good relationship with students, understanding who they are and their goals for learning or improving their English.

Saxophone

Hello, my name is Mary and I play the alto saxophone. I began playing in the 5th grade, and was consistently one of the best players in the band through my senior year in high school. I participated in regional and state contests and achieved high marks.

I completed one year at the college level where I played in the marching band, concert band, jazz band, quartet, and as a soloist. The rigor of these experiences along with the high expectations of my professor helped me grow as a musician. In the years since I have played in community band, as a church musician and of course, just for fun!

I would love to help beginning students. Although I am specialized in the Alto Saxophone, I have knowledge of the others: Soprano, Tenor, Baritone and feel comfortable with them. The technique, breathing, and care of the instrument is relatively the same for all saxophones.

Whether for school band or just because you always wanted to learn to play, I can teach YOU how to play the saxophone!

Spanish

I can help anyone learn or improve their Spanish, as I speak with native fluency, and am a licensed Spanish teacher with lots of tutoring experience. I have lived in Latin America and have traveled throughout Spain and have known people from almost everywhere Spanish is spoken. I also help with sourcing materials like books and other media. If you're willing to take the time, you can learn or improve your Spanish!

Writing

I think because I was educated in the 1960s and 1970s and had a mother and father who were accomplished communicators, I have become a good writer. I also believe there is no excuse for bad writing, and reading good work makes good writers. I have helped a number of people with their writing, and I have had numerous opportunities to write. These include papers in college, business writing, marketing materials, editorials, newsletters, poetry, and humor. Sure it's hard work to write well, but effective communication is often the one thing that sets a person apart from the rest.
