University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (Bio and Environ Sci)
I believe that a strong education is one of the most important assets to success in life. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin -- Milwaukee with a double major in Biology and Conservation & Environmental Sciences. After college, I worked in the education department of a science museum and as a marine mammal trainer for seals and sea lions in Milwaukee, WI. I later pursued a teaching certificate at Concordia University -- Wisconsin to better my own education and learn the skills necessary to share my love for learning with others.
I am certified to instruct middle through high school biology and other life sciences courses and have two years teaching experience in a high school setting. My informal educational experiences paired with my classroom teaching experience gives me an alternative insight to educational success. I believe in challenging students to do their very best work and provide encouragement every step of the way. I excel in differentiation and am able to adjust curriculum and content to meet the level of my students to provide positive learning opportunities.
I specialize in supporting students in biology and other life science courses. Major topics of study include general biology, genetics, cell biology, ecology, evolution and zoology. My experience as a marine mammal trainer also allows me to support students in animal biology and basic psychology courses due to the nature of the animal training career. I have instructed biology courses for 9th-11th grade students and Project Lead the Way biomedical science courses geared toward 9th-12th graders.
I believe students need to build strong study skills and habits in order to excel in their coursework. I encourage students to find a method of studying that allows them to be successful while following their classroom curriculum in my study sessions.
I value feedback provided by my clients and believe there are always opportunities for growth. I am flexible and am willing to work with clients when it is convenient for them. If a session needs to be cancelled, I am happy to reschedule to another time provided I am given appropriate notice.
I look forward to hearing from you and am excited to help you succeed in exploring the wonderful world of biology! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My undergraduate degrees were in biology and conservation & environmental science. I am a certified 6-12 biology/life science teacher with two years of experience. I am a marine mammal trainer with five years of experience, and I am an environmental educator with five years experience.
I have taken college course work in genetics and have taught both Mendelian Genetics and Human Genetics in my high school classroom. I am participating in a teacher development workshop through San Diego Zoo Safari Park that will provide me with real-world data on their genetic research that helps provide conservation for animals around the world. I will be able to use these resources to help teach others about applied genetics. Genetics is one of my favorite subjects to teach, and I have many support materials that would help students succeed in this subject area.
I focused on animal biology in college and was pre-vet for a portion of my undergrad degree. I have worked in a vet clinic as a vet assistant and worked five years as a marine mammal trainer of seals and sea lions at Oceans of Fun in Milwaukee, WI. I have extensive knowledge of animal histories and husbandry (medical care) of marine animals.
