About Amy

Are you a history hater? Do you dread writing assignments? History is about story telling and asking questions about past events and people just like us. I have seven years experience working with college aged students and adults teaching history and advising in writing and research strategies. I have taught United States History, Western Civilization and World History classes in five universities across the United States.

I enjoy collaborating with students to identify their strengths. From there, students and I identify areas for further development and collaborate to help you achieve your goals. My most meaningful teaching experiences have been with students who bring a variety of life experiences and perspectives into their class work. I aim to approach students where they are developmentally, particularly offering students guidance in reading comprehension and note taking skills that will help them succeed in college. My class assignments convey clear student learning objectives, especially stressing the development of essay writing skills and critical analysis of course readings. I also stress that the classroom is a safe space to explore opposing views. I strive to create a classroom community where students can participate in their learning. I invite student directed projects, encouraging students to seek representations of themselves or their interests in their study of history.

My education qualifications:

B.A. in Art History, University of Illinois at Chicago
M.A. in Peace Studies (International Relations and Conflict Studies), University of Bradford, England
Ph.D. in U.S. History and Gender and Women's Studies, University of Illinois at Chicago

I have worked as a proofreader for academic publications, I have edited a peer-reviewed academic journal, and I am a published author. For twenty years I mentored students in academic writing and research and have worked individually with students on writing structure and clarity.

I have twenty years experience working with late adolescents and adults. I have worked individually with students on-line and in colleges and universities throughout the U.S. My goals is to make the learning of history, geography and politics accessible and enjoyable. I use storytelling and hands-on history exploration and history making so that these topics come alive as relevant to our current lives.

Feel free to contact me with your study topics so that we can develop a study plan to accommodate your needs and goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a doctorate in United States history. I have taught seven years in colleges and universities since I received my doctorate. I have worked with adolescents and adults helping many to overcome their dislike of the subject and to come to see how they have a personal appreciation for the events and debates from the past.

Proofreading

I have worked as a proofreader and editor for encyclopedias and I have been a research assistant for award-winning authors.

Social Studies

As a teacher of U.S. history, all of my class content and exercises incorporate anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology analysis. We examine the social structures and social and cultural context that shape human behavior. Our discussions and exercises promote critical thinking on the role that these themes play in the construction of American communities and public policy.

Writing

I have seven years experience working one-on-one with adolescents and adults to clarify their writing goals and to organize and clarify their academic writing.
