I have been a classroom teacher for 24 years and I have been tutoring children in reading and math for 18 of those years. I enjoy the one-on-one time with students.
Most of the tutoring that I have done has been long term. My main goal for the student whether reading or math, is self confidence. The second goal is growth in the subject area. The third is a positive attitude toward school. I use a variety of techniques. Each child is different. Some children learn better visually, audially, or through physical movement. Job one for me, is to find a unique plan that works for the student. Tutoring is not a "magic pill" that solves all learning issues but it can be very helpful in expanding a students learning abilities or as a good review of a subject matter.
I have many references. I prefer to work from my home or the nearby library. I use sticker charts and rewards to reinforce accomplishment. I have many learning tools, games, and books that I use in my teaching. If a child is struggling in school to just do the same thing over seems pointless.I have often talked with the student's teacher when it has been appropriate. It is good to be on the same page with the parents and the teacher. My availability is open. I have often worked with homeschoolers during the day. After school or evenings has also worked. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored close to 100 students in grades K-6. It has often been in reading which relates to language and spelling skills. My first step is to check the student for comprehension, phonics, and language skills because they effect other learning areas. Basic math is also an area of experience for me. I use a number of games and tools to work on math skills. I use a reward system for tasks that are done to build confidence and help tutoring to "feel positive" to the student.
Phonics can be very challenging for children. The rules of phonics in English, are full of exceptions. I use techniques such as rhyming, context clues, and games that include blending sounds. My degrees are in elementary education and early childhood education. I have been teaching phonics components for over twenty years.
