About Fred

Hello all,

My name is Fred. I am a graduate student at Eastern Michigan University pursuing my M.A. in Math. I also graduated from EMU with a B.S. in Mathematics and minor in geology. I have been tutoring math for over 6 years, both privately and as part of a team. Math is referred to by many as "the language of the universe", and it was this that sparked my curiosity in the subject! Our ability to describe the world around us and the universe we live in by using mathematics is truly astonishing! I always hear students ask, "When will I ever use this?" My answer is, "Every single day!" Whether it is finding the original price of a discounted item (or vice versa), calculating how much gas you will need to travel a certain distance, or wanting to know the amount of fence needed for optimal area and lowest cost; math will help you think through and solve these problems.

I want to help students understand the beauty of math. The job of teachers and tutors is to present material to students in a way that best benefits the student to ensure they understand the material. I understand the struggle of understanding mathematics as it is one that I was faced with in high school and I believe this is one trait that helps me relate with students and let them know he/she is not alone and many people struggle with the subject. Each student is different, and this fact makes it interesting for me because I get to find new ways to help others understand difficult topics. Students also help me learn by presenting new methods and teaching me new ways to think about things!

Seeing the "light bulb" turn on when a student understands something is one of the most rewarding feelings I have ever experienced. I would love to help more students turn on their "light bulb" and in turn have them pay it forward by educating others. I have tutored elementary students and adults, as well as many ages in between, in many different subjects so I am not strictly limited to tutoring math. I look forward to working with you and your student!

Best,
Fred

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The ACT Math test consists of six content areas. These areas include pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry.

I performed well in this subject of the ACT and have helped others prepare for this area of the test.

ACT Science

I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. in Mathematics and a minor in geology. I was given the opportunity to do geological research and funded by NASA to conduct it.

Algebra 1

While working with the team of tutors for the Department of Mathematics at Eastern Michigan University, this is one of the most common courses students request assistance with. Therefore, I have adequate experience with this course and enjoy helping students reason through problems.

Algebra 2

Similar to algebra 1, many students request help with this course and it is one of my favorite courses to tutor. I have adequate experience helping with this class and enjoy helping students understand the material.

Astronomy

I am an amateur astronomer and have volunteered at Perkins Observatory in Delaware, OH.

Calculus

I have received an "A" in all of my calculus courses (i.e., Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, and Differential Equations) and enjoy helping students begin to understand upper level continuous mathematics.

Elementary Math

I am a math major and tutor students in elementary math, as well as many other subjects, with a team of tutors at Eastern Michigan University.

Elementary Science

I have studied many areas of science, including being a geology minor, and I am currently conducting scientific research that will be forwarded to NASA.

Geology

I was a geology minor at Eastern Michigan University and conducted research in the area with a research grant awarded to me through the Michigan Space Grant Consortium which was funded by NASA.
I have tutored students in introductory geology courses.

Geometry

I have taken a college geometry course to fulfill part of my requirements for my math major and passed the course with an "A".

Linear Algebra

One of my first courses at Eastern Michigan University was linear algebra. I never scored below an "A" on any of my assignments, extra credit, or exams which lead to me passing the class with over 100%. I found this course quite interesting because there are many applications of it that can be used across many industries. (Whilst in the class, we applied it to the transportation industry and used matrices to compute price and amount of goods being shipped from multiple countries and found ways to optimize for the least amount of money spent.)

Prealgebra

As a tutor I have accumulated much experience helping with this class. Many students I tutor have questions about this class and I have helped them better their understanding of it.

Precalculus

I am studying math at Eastern Michigan University.
I taught myself precalculus and this was the class that made me want to study math and pursue it as a career. I taught myself this course in high school and I am now pursuing my graduate degree in math.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry was taught with my precalculus class in high school. If you read the precalculus qualifications then you will see that trigonometry was a subject that sparked my interest in mathematics.
