My subjects include, but are not limited to, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, statistics, discreet math, pre calculus, ACT math and science. Effective tutoring requires building a relationship quickly. Meeting the student where they are, having an open mind, and being genuine are qualities I bring to each tutoring session. My goal is for the student to understand the material and to feel happy and confident with their work. As good study habits are observed, I strive to keep the environment cheerful and fun by being laid back and coaching a positive attitude.

Not all students and tutors are good mixes. That is why I offer a money back guarantee on your first session. If you are not confident we can work together, your first session is free, no questions asked. I also offer a discounted rate if you a willing to travel.

Grammar,

Grammar

As a college graduate with a Bachelor's degree and a certified teacher, proper grammar has been especially important. Writing essays for various English, literature, history, and even math courses is a common college task. As a teacher, writing reports, evaluations, course descriptions and correspondence with parents, colleagues and supervisors, good grammar was a professional requirement. This combination of college training and professional experience makes me an ideal grammar tutor.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics is generally interspersed throughout algebra 1 and algebra 2 in high school. that means I have as much experience teaching statistics as I do with other high school subjects. For math majors in college, basic statistics is taken as a freshman level course while college statistics is taken in the junior year. College level statistics involves multivariable calculus, matrices, and trigonomety.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have many hours of experience at Sylvan Learning Center teaching reading and math skills to elementary aged children. I also have experience as a substitute, paraprofessional, tutor, and summer school teacher for elementary aged students. Finally, as a VISTA volunteer, I designed programs for at-risk youth to transition from elementary to middle school including 5th grade to 6th grade.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

In addition to teaching high school mathematics I have had several opportunities (including training at Sylvan Learning Center) to teach and tutor elementary students. I make it a point to make lessons as fun as possible with children, to give them appropriate and generous praise, and to be insistent that they not feel ashamed or embarrassed of making mistakes.

Study Skills

As a current student enrolled in a graduate course in mathematics, I know how important study skills are. My approach to teaching them would be to model what I do to be successful. However, as a certified teacher, I am trained to recognize diverse learning styles and can guide students to finding the habits and settings they would need to maximize their study time. I also have experience with Sylvan Learning Center helping kids practice these skills.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Although prealgebra is introduced before high school, it contains many very abstract concepts. One of my many strengths as a tutor is to chop these weighty concepts into manageable chunks.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is somewhat a culmination of all of its preceding topics. There are not many new concepts introduced in precalculus, however some may be new to students. The central concept of limits is given more emphasis as a it forms the basis of calculus. Although I have not had the opportunity to teach precalculus, I am very comfortable with the concepts it addresses.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Discrete math is a special genre of mathematics that focuses on number theory, modular arithmetic, combinatorics, graph theory and several other topics. Many of these topics are part of other subjects, for example, combinatorics is used in statistics, number theory in arithmetic, and modular arithmetic in abstract algebra (a 400 level course in college). Discrete math was my first course in my masters program at Siena Heights University. I used much of the material as enrichment topics for my high school classes.

ADHD

My first teaching opportunity was for an alternative high school program that included small class sizes for students with ADD/ADHD. My lessons for them included kinetic modalities such as acting out math and logic problems, using the chalk board and white boards for in-class assignments, and making games out of memorization and drill practice sessions.

I also have classroom experience working with autistic students. I believe all students can learn with the right approach and have been very successful with autistic students.
Hard of Hearing,

My very first experience as an educator came from being a camp counselor in a summer school program for special needs students. There I had the opportunity to learn and practice American Sign Language for 6 years and help deaf and hard of hearing students enjoy traditional summer camp activities.

Aspergers and other autism spectrum syndromes were part of my experience during my first job as a summer camp counselor for special needs children in West Bloomfield school districts "Scamp" program. In college I had several classes devoted to child psychology, development, and special needs.
