About Colton

My love for teaching stems from a long line of teachers, dating all the way back to my grandparents. I've had the benefit of growing up around educators specializing in various subjects, but have always found myself gravitating towards the world of mathematics.

I have experience working with grades K-5 through a special program called Sci-Tech. Our approach was to encourage students in the sciences through use of technology and hands on learning. However, the majority of my experience lies with high school level students.

I have worked for the Gear Up program as a Math and Physics tutor. Through the use of computer programs, we took students who had difficulty learning various subjects, usually having failed them before, and allowed them to move at their own pace with gentle guidance coming from their respective tutors. I would usually situate myself in the center of multiple students as they use their laptops to complete their lessons, while I jumped in as needed to help them better understand various concepts.

Besides Gear-Up, I have also had the pleasure of working as a tutor for the AVID program. The students in this program typically suffered from some type of trauma, but had every means to succeed if given the right push. Our days would consist of me getting to know and understand what worked for each student so I could teach them accordingly.

In both cases, my tutoring style has been less about memorizing the subject material. Instead, I focus on understanding how to approach concepts and which questions could bring a better comprehension of the subject matter. I know I've succeeded once my students come up to me and start asking a question, only to say "Never mind," and go back to complete the problem that would have once stumped them.

I have recently moved to Wyoming, Mi, and, while I am still getting myself situated, I should be able to accommodate any schedule given 48 hours.

I look forward to making your acquaintance and helping you discover your own love for these subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The ACT tends to pose a challenge to my students in one of two ways. Either they feel un-prepared in the content, in which case we dive into why Math functions until the feel prepared, or they have a hard time understand word problems. In the case of the latter, we tend to focus on honing in to what the questions are asking as well as what information they are providing. Beyond this, I also work with students on test-taking strategies, helping them feel secure in their preparedness.

Algebra 1

I regularly tutor students who require an in-depth understanding of how functions work. We delve in, understanding why mathematics works the way it does, focusing on the why instead of the how. This method has worked for both recovering students and students wishing to excel.

Algebra 2

I have regularly tutored Algebra 2 across my Mathematics career, even in the GEAR-UP and AVID programs. I work with students who have fallen behind, and have taught the curriculum from scratch to those wishing to get ahead.

Elementary Math

I was in charge of a program called sci-tech where I worked with students grade levels kinder through fifth. I also helped tutor in mathematics when other teachers were overwhelmed or, in some cases, when students felt more comfortable with me instead of their teacher. Beyond this, I have had the pleasure of tutoring a few students privately, helping them break down Mathematics until they understood everything at its most minute levels.

Geometry

I regularly tutored Geometry in the Gear-Up Program. I have tutored students who have fallen behind, as well as taught the curriculum from scratch. Either way, we approach via questioning and understanding, leading to increased comprehension.

Prealgebra

I regularly work with freshman taking Algebra, and have had some experience working with middle-school students who require more foundation. The focus is always to lay good groundwork, guaranteeing success in higher levels of mathematics.

Precalculus

I have tutored varying versions of Pre-Calculus through the AVID and GEAR-UP programs in the public school setting. I have also taught the subject privately as well. In both cases, the focus is always to hone in on the fundamentals, breaking down concepts until my students have mastered Pre-Calculus at every level.

SAT Math

The SAT tends to pose a challenge to my students in one of two ways.

Trigonometry

The vast majority of students who approach me about Trigonometry all struggle with the same problem. They have been attempting to memorize everything, from the radian values, to the Pythagorean identities, to all possible aspects of the subject. I take my students and start them from the beginning, showing them why the content they've been covering is a thing to begin with, helping them derive Trigonometry instead of hopelessly memorizing it.
