About Corey

Quid novis! I am an archaeologist and graduate of Vanderbilt University looking to help others explore the world and its past.

In the classroom, I have focused primarily on Spanish, Latin, social sciences, and pre-modern world history. When not in class, however, I am actively engaged in scholarly archaeology research. I have served as the GIS specialist and field school instructor for an archaeological project in Peru and have presented my research at multiple professional conventions. This experience has allowed me to not only teach students facts and techniques, but to show them why what they learn matters and how to apply it in the real world.

I began tutoring in high school and organized a team to run free, open sessions twice each week for students in any class. Since then, I have taken on several private tutoring positions and helped middle school, high school, and college students see success in general classes as well as entrance exams. Most recently, I worked as a field school instructor with a project that, in addition to conducting archaeological research, seeks to improve the access to and funding for education in the rural Peruvian Andes. My teaching skills have been further tested in my duties as the director of collegiate and high school musical ensembles and an Eagle Scout. Through this, I have worked with students of many backgrounds and have learned to develop motivating, effective strategies that suit the individual's needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Teaching history and heritage is one of my greatest pleasures. I have over 30 credit hours of university history courses, and have taught at a field school for college students. I have previously tutored high school level American and World History.

Since 2012, I have been an active member of an archaeological project in Peru, as both a crew chief during excavation and an instructor in the lab, classroom, and field. I emphasized interactive methods that taught both facts and techniques to encourage future independence. My collegiate coursework has included everything from general theory to Egyptian art to Mayan heiroglpyhs.

I have taken three years of Classics courses, including history, art, law, and literature of the classical world. I have also been employed by my school's department and made personal connections with many professors.

As a GIS specialist, I frequently use geometry, algebra, and trigonometry in my daily work.

Social Studies

With collegiate classwork in history, anthropology, and linguistics and a well-used passport, I present a holistic look at the Social Studies. I specialize in pre-modern history and can help students place themselves in the larger picture of world history.

As part of my archaeology fieldwork, I have spent the last four summers in Peru and Bolivia, and many academic journals in my field are published only in Spanish. This supplements my 5+ years of Spanish classes.

The only thing that can compare with my love of performing is helping other pursue theirs. I have performed in over 15 different productions in the past few years, and have been on the technical crew for several more. I have also taken collegiate acting and tech classes as part of my theater minor, and have used my experience to assist with introductory drama classes.
