My name is Jennifer and I am passionate not only about teaching, but the tutoring experience! I have been a tutor since 2003 (over twelve years and thousands of hours of experience) working with families of students ranging between preschool to adult in age. I have helped dozens of students in the following subject areas: math, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, science, history, study skills, Spanish, prealgebra, and algebra to name a few. I have a teaching degree from Oakland University and I taught middle school science for three years before becoming a professional tutor. I do speak Spanish (limited - and studied it for six years.)

Not only do I teach at night, but I homeschool my own children during the day. I am patient, kind, and committed to the students and families I work with in improving their educational skills. I believe every child/adult has the ability to learn. With patient and caring instruction, a desire from the student to want to improve, and support from their family, he/she can accomplish their academic goals. I believe in the tutoring experience, that sometimes, all it takes is to have a tutor work with the student and fit the missing pieces of understanding back into place. I have had much success over the years and I look forward to being the jigsaw piece that helps complete your student's academic portrait!

Leadership:

There is a growing need to teach students leadership skills. Everyone is called to lead in some capacity as he/she matures and learns through life's lessons. Having the right information can lead the way toward opportunity and success in every aspect of a student's life. Blending a solid academic foundation with the life skills supported by leadership principles, will give your student the posture, confidence, and preparedness to enter life's journey after high school. It is never too early to begin teaching life changing principles. Give your student the extra edge and inquire of ways leadership skills can be added to your student's academic experience.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I received my degree in Elementary Education (K-8). My field experience during my education concentrated in grades 1st-4th. I have been a tutor for over ten years and have worked with dozens of children between grades K-6. I have worked in all core subject areas: reading, writing, math, science, history, language arts, spelling, grammar, and study skills. I currently homeschool my 7th grader, 3rd grader, and preschooler. I am very familiar with the concepts in each subject area. My passion is teaching students ranging in grades K-8. I have thousands of hours in tutoring students and have had much success in bringing understanding to the elementary mind. I am pleasant, kind, and caring. I work to build the confidence of my students during this tender age through a successful learning experience.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have taught phonics and reading to dozens of students since becoming a tutor in 2003. I have a teaching degree in elementary education from Oakland University. I believe in starting at the beginning, especially with phonics: teaching letter/sound recognition, blends, digraphs, trigraphs, as examples. I stress sight word recognition as awareness of specific sounds are taught and repeated. I believe phonics is very important in the primary grades and affects a student's reading ability in upper elementary, middle school, and even high school if these basics are not mastered early on in a student's education. I have great patience and gentle correction to build up a student's confidence in his/her reading ability. I homeschool my 7th grader and 3rd grader, and have taught them to read past their grade levels. My preschooler likes to read and is able to recognize some sight words at this tender age. I enjoy teaching phonics and I believe it is the cornerstone in a successful learning experience. It is the key to understanding language, communicating with others, and affects all other subject areas. It is the very essence of understanding and can give every opportunity in the world to a student if mastered.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Before WyzAnt, I had been a tutor for another in-home tutoring company that taught a specific, well-written, and organized study skills course. As a tutor, I used this experience to teach students skills that would help them: organize their time and materials, set a plan for previewing and reviewing course materials, understand short-term/long-term memory and fear of test taking, and memory devices that would aid in information recall. I have taught study skills on numerous occasions to students who see the importance of planning their educational goals and I have helped many students lay out a plan of action to guide them. I believe study skills is the edge that gives a person the advantage to succeed without limit. Study skills can reteach a person's behavioral approach to studying. Without a good study habit, opportunity will pass by without even knowing it. It's the difference between a good student and an outstanding self-learner.

Test Preparation

ASVAB,

ASVAB

As a former member of the Air Force National Guard, I have military experience that compliments my teaching skills in preparing students for the ASVAB. Like many of my young adult students, I experienced their same road in preparing for the military as a career. My journey began as a senior in high school, where I took the ASVAB as a way to prepare for many options for my future. Once passing the exam, I saw the military as an exciting experience that would give me many quality life skills upon entering adulthood. While being committed to my military service, I continued my education as a full-time student in becoming a teacher. As I learned in the classroom to enrich and teach others, I was also learning from my officers and sergeants, training me to protect, honor, and respect my fellow service men and women and the civilians I encountered on a daily basis at work and school. Through the years as a teacher, I have taught many of the fundamentals listed on the ASVAB. I have been fortunate to be both a teacher and a military member and because of these two experiences, I have gained a wonderfully unique background that assists me in preparing others who choose the same enriching career path in entering the armed forces.

Patient tutor Algebra 2

My daughter had a final exam coming, her regular tutor was out of town the week before it and Jennifer jumped into a semester's worth of learning to help my daughter study. She worked with her for two hours on areas of concern to make sure she had a handle on it. We received her grade yesterday and she had an A on the final exam, A- in the class. We'll take it! Thanks for the assist.

Patient & flexible

Jennifer is working with my middle schooler who is bright & hard working but has ADHD. Jennifer has accommodated my daughter through her struggles with original composition as well as math. She has worked with her to break assignments down & get a sense of organization. My daughter hates the idea of tutoring yet appreciates her time with Jennifer.

Jennifer is patient and a great communicator!

I went with Jennifer because of the reviews I read about her. Words just can't describe what a wonderful tutor she is. She has an awesome way of teaching and communicating without overwhelming a struggling student!

Flexible and Prepared

Jennifer did a great job working with my son for his Algebra 2 class. She was always prepared with discussion materials and she was very accommodating to our hectic schedule. I believe that reinforcing what was taught in class did help my son retain the materials and apply it.

Great tutor!!!!!

Jennifer has been doing an excellent job tutoring my daughter in AP Bio. At first my daughter was reluctant to tutoring, but Jennifer has been able to connect with her. She finds ways to relate difficult subjects to my daughter's interests. She is teaching her important study skills. My daughter is always very happy after her tutoring sessions and she scored much better on her first test of this semester. I also commend Jennifer for her flexibility in scheduling and fitting my daughter into her schedule.

A really helpful and knowledgeable tutor!

After my 13 year old, who had been struggling in Honors Biology, met with Jennifer only 2 times, she aced her next quiz, and did well in the next chapter test. Most important, she started enjoying what she was understanding, and we saw our daughter, usually an excellent student, regain her confidence in her own skills. Thank you, Jennifer!
