I have been a classroom teacher for 21 years in the Oakland county school system. With a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Master's in Reading Methodology, I often worked with students who just needed the extra individualized help that brought them to competency. I know the personal struggles a reader can have and how they can surpass all obstacles to become successful students. As a retiree, I have more time to help individual students reach their achievement goals in phonemic awareness, decoding skills, reading fluency and comprehension. I love special interest reading because it sparks the imagination and motivates the student. I prefer working side by side with a student in the quiet confines of a tutoring room in a nearby library. I believe it will prove the most beneficial to the student.
I have applied evidence-based best practices in helping struggling readers for many years. I know the value of individualized help or one to one tutoring just an hour a day can have on the overall improvement in student skill and ability. Intensive intervention can bring improvement in a matter of months.
Engaging an extra hour a day 3-5 days a week along with progress monitoring on a regular basis can bring success to any readers life. Upon contact we can discuss what needs to be mastered. I look forward to sharpening skills and preparing for success in your next school year. Hope to see you soon. Mrs. J. I have been a classroom teacher for 21 years in the Oakland county school system. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an elementary educator for 1st-4th graders, phonics instruction was an integral part of the literacy block each day. Also, after school tutoring for my students was High Five Phonics, an extension of the phonics and phonemic awareness instruction given in class.
I completed workshops for DIBELS and MLPP training which were vital to the Oakland Schools Literacy Program curriculum.
My Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Master of Education degrees included instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness.
