As a teacher, there is nothing more important to me than the success of my students. As an English teacher, there is little I enjoy more than the connections students make between great stories and the world they live in. Being able to make those connections, however, first requires some ground work. Whether in the area of reading or writing or test preparation, many students must learn how to learn!
In order to understand any text, for example, students need to be able to understand what they are reading (vocabulary), know how to find the message that the author is trying to convey (right there in the text, some in the text and some in me, all in me), know how to make comparisons to understand differences (thinking maps), know how to evaluate, and know how to reflect on why it all matters before they can really make sense of it.
In order to write in any capacity, students need to be able to identify a goal (type of writing), state a focus (thesis), structure sentences (grammar), order their thoughts (thinking maps), defend positions (use examples), and make writing interesting.
In order to be successful on tests (MME, ACT, SAT, MEAP), students need to be able to read efficiently (skimming versus close and critical), eliminate incorrect answers (process of elimination, looking for traps), and choose the best answer (return to text).
I bring a lot of humor into my classroom each day, along with a bag of tricks to help all kinds of learners recognize their potential for success. I have experience with a variety of special education needs, including extensive experience with ADD/ADHD and distraction issues. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
