About Sasha

I have three decades of experience teaching diverse populations ranging in age from infants to nonagenarians. Innovative, talented artist with exhibition experience and art therapy and crisis intervention training; skilled school administrator with expertise in specialized services, ESL - sheltered English instruction, art education, curriculum development, early childhood and higher education; a proven ability to differentiate common core curriculum, meet the needs of students with learning and language challenges, and a strong background in project-based, art-infused, placed-based and inclusive education would like to help you through joyful, engaging and meaningful learning. I am interested in teaching reading to elementary aged students, especially those with IEPs and ESL and Art to any age student.

I have 20 years experience as a teacher in a public school where English was not the native language of my students. I have been trained in SIOP and have earned my Ed Specialist degree (half way to a PH.D.) in English as a Second Language from Wayne State. I love teaching reading, vocabulary and language in the context of life! I love learning about other people's cultures and teaching them about mine. I am a trained special education teacher with college level teaching experience.

I use multiple intelligences to teach language. If a student were willing I would love to teach English in the Expeditionary Learning Model ... going to the zoo or park or museum or other real life setting and reading and writing and talking about language in the context of that place! I was voted Best Place-Based Educator 2016 at the Annual Place-Based Conference in Grand Rapids.

If you want to learn in a way that is best for you, we can figure that out and use your strengths to help you get where you want to be whether it is learning how to draw or paint, or learn English as a new language, or get remedial help with your k-5 school subjects. I love teaching, I love meeting new students, I love being part of the plan to empowering you to get what you need to be who you want to be. Please contact me soon, if you want to learn more about me and my teaching methods and to schedule a session. My calendar fills up quickly, so don't delay!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
