My name is Jan ("Yahn"). Helping my own child with middle school and high school math got me interested in tutoring.

I really enjoy helping students improve their math skills. Having students experience that aha-moment when they get it is very rewarding. I care about my students and consider myself a patient and thorough tutor.

I have tutored middle school, high school, and college students.

My goal is to help students develop a better understanding of not only the theory but the applications of math as well. It's about improving problem-solving skills, enhancing test-taking confidence, and, of course, better grades. Students don't necessarily have to love math - although that certainly helps - but a better appreciation of what math is and why it's important to learn math is an objective.

My teaching style is aimed at helping students improve their critical thinking, and analytical reasoning skills. By asking them questions students are guided through the solution process rather than giving them the cookbook steps to solve problems. The goal is for the student to develop insight and understanding, not rote memorization.

Math is not a spectator sport. You can only learn math by working at it, studying the theory, and doing lots of problems. Students are expected to be actively engaged in the learning process, be persistent, do the homework, and ask questions.

Usually, I tutor at a public place, such as a public library or coffee shop, but I can come to your home, if necessary.

As far as my own education, I have an MBA from the University of Michigan and a graduate degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

For many years I have worked in the automotive industry in a number of engineering, management, and business development roles. My engineering experience enables me to make math come alive with real applications.

If you're interested, contact me through Wyzant if you have any questions or to schedule an intro tutoring session to see if I'm the right tutor for you.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Excellent tutor

I highly recommend Jan G. for tutoring mathematics! My daughter worked with him for an entire semester and we plan to work with him again in the upcoming fall semester. He was always easy to reach by cell, text, or email. We were able to work in regular weekly sessions without any problems. My daughter was able to master the course content with his help and dedication. Thank you Jan!

Helped my daughter greatly!

When we first met with Jan, my daughter had already failed the first semester of Algebra and was on course to fail the second semester as well. After meeting with him each week, my daughter was able to bring her grade up to a B. At first my daughter did not want to go (it was tutoring after all), but as the weeks went by she found that Jan explained things better than her teacher did in class. She discovered that this was partly why she struggled so much; the teacher would not take the time to explain things and Jan was able to go back over her homework and answer the specific questions she had with the assignments. Thank you!
