I am a capable tutor in several subjects, and I am prepared to give my students caring and personalized instruction, with a good laugh thrown in for good measure. My goal is always to help my students reach their goals. I have been a reading and ESL Tutor for the Oakland Literacy Council for the past three years. All their tutors go through three days of training to learn the latest techniques in teaching these subjects. While a teacher at a local high school, I also did research and studied reading proficiency techniques to use within the classroom. All of these skills can be used at the elementary and high school level.
I enjoy a classroom setting, although I feel individual tutoring offers personal attention which is usually the most beneficial.
As a certified secondary education teacher, I taught Art and Biology for over 27 years. I am also an accomplished artist and I show my work in local galleries. My specialties are drawing, painting, design, and I have a background in advertising design. I also have a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, and another Post Master's Degree
My well rounded background has prepared me to offer a range of instruction in a variety of subjects. Depending on the student's needs, I am prepared to do research and use the text books that are also used in the student's classroom. Please contact me for a personal interview to discuss the student's needs and goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
If you have taken the Act Test you are familiar with the reading segment. It usually consists of a portion that you read and then it asks a question about what you just read with multiple choice statements for the answers. I recently took a practice test and I did pretty well. I can give you tips on how to read the test and how to select the right answers.
I have taught drawing for over 20 years and draw myself. I usually start the drawing lesson with contour and gesture drawing exercises. I may then present the basic forms used in drawing and teach how to shade the objects you are drawing. Shading of an object depends on the location of the light source, as the darkest areas are away from the light. We then would do some lessons in perspective which will help you draw things the way we see them. I will set up a still-
life for you to draw and to shade. I would teach you to draw interior and exterior, and landscape drawings. Drawing objects of nature are always fun. I would give you encourageing critiques on how to improve your abilities, all of which are connected to your ability to see what you are trying to draw. If you like, you could learn how to draw portraits and the figure. Once you learn how to draw you will really enjoy it.
I will help the ESL student learn English. I will learn the student's current ability in English and go from there. We will work on speaking first and then on reading and writing.
Study skills for doing well in the classroom often involve practicing new behaviors that are easy to learn. As a college graduate, it was necessary for me to utilize and learn these so I could be successful. These include good organization, listening skills, good notetaking skills and test taking skills.
It is also important to know the student's learning style. There can be 7-8 primary learning styles, with variations for each. Once the student's learning style is determined, and the student and tutor understand it, techniques can be applied that will improve all facets of the student's learning.
At the same time, there are basic skills the student can start to practice to improve overall learning. These skills include how to come to class prepared to learn, alert and functional, even if the student does not like the class. As the student's ability improves, so does the student's feeling about the class, and so does the learning ability.
Good listening skills are always important and there are several ways to improve them. Reflecting upon what the teacher says and repeating the information to oneself is helpful. Notetaking is another form of that process. Learning tips for recognizing the important information that the teacher is presenting to the class is also key.
At the same time the student needs to learn how to interpret his/her notes, and to refine the information gathered.
Organizing all of the class materials is also of most importance. Students must learn how to keep each class separate and to keep a record of when assignments are due.
There are also habits that can be learned for preparing for and taking tests. All of these can be simple steps to help any student improve their learning ability in any class.
As a tutor for improving study skills, and motivation, I learn as much about the student as possible and then personalize the lessons to fit their needs.
There are additional skills within each of the above categories and subjects that can be applied for overall improvement in study habits, motivation and outcomes. I work with each student to check that the new skills are being practiced. I will go over homework assignments and notes to help determine weaknesses and or strengths within the student's written or verbal abilities.
The lessons will be carefully discussed to determine comprehension, acquired knowledge, and to identify areas that present a challenge. We would then work to find a comfortable method of improvement within each context.
