About Sharon

I am a certified Elementary teacher who has over 20 years of experience. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education, with a Major in Math/Science and a Minor in History/Social Sciences. Furthermore, I have graduate classes in Reading and Language Arts. I love teaching students, and I knew it was my calling when I was in 2nd grade! My teaching experience includes teaching full-time in Catholic schools for most of the 1st through 8th grades, and subbing for all grades, Kindergarten through 8th grade, all subjects, in 11 public school districts over the course of several years.

My teaching style consists of using games, and other fun activities, to help me teach my students. I like to make learning fun and interesting. In addition to these teaching tactics, I also help my students by supplying them with basic study tools to enable them to tackle any subject. In addition, the knowledge I receive from workshops, various reading materials, and other resources help me to guide my students with their homework.

I specialize in Reading and Math, starting at the Kindergarten level through Eighth grade. I pay special attention to sight vocabulary, and phonics, as these are the building blocks to Reading Comprehension. For Mathematics, I concentrate on the basics of learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division at first, then move onto more complicated applications when it comes to solving other mathematical problems.

I am looking forward to working with you and your child. Before we begin, I gather some basic information from your child so that I can better help your child with his/her area of concern. Every child is unique and I always use your child's strengths to help with his/her weaknesses and build upon them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have taught every subject from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. I had to teach the Common Core of every subject. My lessons were very thorough with the objective, materials used, and so forth. They were submitted every week to be reviewed by my Vice Principal before they were used as lessons for my classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 20 years. After receiving my B.S. in Elementary Education from Oakland University, I quickly began to teach. Several months later, I went back to Oakland University to begin my classes in the Reading and Language Arts Master's Degree program. I have taught all subjects in Kindergarten through 8th grade and have enjoyed each one.

Keeping the idea that learning should be fun is my approach to teaching. I have used a variety of mediums, games, and methods to help my students in the past do well in the subject he or she has been struggling with. I hope that you would consider me to be the teacher that will help you see "the light".

Handwriting

As an elementary school teacher for more than 20 years, I have taught many years of handwriting in my classroom. In the past, I have used both D'Nealian and Zane Bloser, as well as cursive writing in my classroom. Handwriting, to me, is an important skill every child should learn. Handwriting needs to be legible in order to get ideas across to the reader. I feel that I have more than enough skill to teach handwriting to my students.

Phonics

Learning how to read is one of the most critical steps in life. Phonics is one of the major components for learning how to read. I hope that I can be the one to bring Reading and Phonics to life for your child. Along with my certification as an Elementary school teacher, I am also well versed in Reading and Language Arts with my Graduate classes at Oakland University. I have over 20 years of experience teaching Phonics within the Reading Curriculum in both Public and Private schools.

Study Skills

Teaching a student Study Skills has been one of my most important lessons in the classroom every year. Students are taught how to organize thoughts and assignments, how to use their time wisely, and so forth. Of course there is more to this, but as a teacher with more than 20 years of experience, I have taught study skills as an integral part of my teaching style. Many students have benefited, and have continued success in their years as a student and beyond.
