I want to share my love for writing, language and literature with others.

I received a BA in Spanish from Hillsdale College in 2004 and an MA in English Language and Literature in 2008. My training in linguistics and foreign languages gives me the skills to understand how students learn languages.

I have traveled to several Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Peru, and Mexico. Through studying language, we understand more fully our own language. Students also learn to look at the world differently by studying different cultures.

Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach. In graduate school, I assisted in writing instruction and helped dozens of new college students improve their writing skills. Writing is important not just for school, but also for a lifetime of communicating ideas to others. With practice and patience, students can learn to communicate their ideas to other people.

I have also served as a volunteer tutor for adult learners of English as a Second Language. Although English can be a hard language to learn, it can be learned in steps.

Please let me know if you would like help with understanding literature. I have studied both English and Spanish literature and am familiar with literary themes and criticism.

To ensure a safe environment I prefer to meet at a school or library. Sessions generally last an hour, unless otherwise requested. Please advise me within 24 hours of any changes in schedule. Lessons can be rescheduled as needed.

I look forward to helping you learn and succeed!

Writing

While in grad school, I taught composition classes on the beginning college level for a year. After graduation, I facilitated online literature courses for a university. Additionally, over the last 10 years I have helped guide adult ESL students in writing for both everyday use and academic use. I have also tutored college and high school students for class assignments. I help students learn to write by finding what is important to them. Often students just need to form their argument in their own words. Once that is established, then I show them how to build an outline that explains why and how their thesis is important. After that we fulfill the ideas by demonstration through examples and citations. Finally, we work on the mechanical structure of the essay. I believe all students can learn to write well with the appropriate time and practice.

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

I have taken undergraduate Bible courses and graduate theology courses at a Christian college and seminary. Relevant courses include the Poetic Books, Biblical worldviews, and preaching practice. All these courses required memorization of dozens of verses or chapters. During that time I preached expository messages and taught Bible lessons to children. I also assisted in evaluating and writing copy for religious textbooks. An effective method for teaching the Bible begins with understanding the overarching narrative structure of creation, fall, and redemption of man. Stories in the biblical accounts of the Old and New testament fit within the framework: Adam and Eve, Samson, David, and others. I like helping students memorize Bible passages. Tactics such as repetition, rhythmic patterns, mnemonic aids, and kinesthetic activities help students remember verses. While memorization is important, it is more important that students understand what they are learning. I enjoy explaining the verses in context of the Bible stories and overall themes of the Bible.
