About Alicia

I have been tutoring since 1976 and am proficient in all subjects except Chemistry, Physics and Calculus. For 16 years, I ran a small Christian school, one-room, multi-age, in which my students gained, on average a year and a half for every year they studied with me.

I am currently taking a break from this very rigorous activity but miss teaching, so I thought a couple of tutoring students might be just the ticket. I have a Master's in Education and have a great deal of experience with 'quirky' learners.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a master's degree in education and tutoring experience with many children with attention difficulties. I also tailored my program at school to the needs of ADD and ADHD children.

Algebra 1

I have taught algebra to 7th-11th graders.

Bible Studies

I teach confirmation class and have written a curriculum for confirmation plus many classes of 5 hour each for the youth conference we run every summer. I read the Bible daily and often refer to commentaries, both Catholic and Protestant, for greater insight. i also occassionally teach adult Bible classes.

Biology

I have taught Biology about every three years for 19 years, so while not my main subject area, I am able to explain and support most school textbooks.

Classics

Had 2 years of Latin, have read the Iliad, the Odyssey and much of the Aeneid. Have also read many ancient texts relating to these, Herodotus' history, some of Plato etc.

Dyslexia

I have taught a number of children with dyslexia successfully using an integrated phonetic approach along with high-interest reading material.

English

I have taught English for 20 years to various ages, including adults.

French

4 years of high school French, 2 years of college French, I am not certified as a French teacher, however.

Probably a great tutor but has a lot of personal tasks she is working on at the same time. — Alicia seems to understand some of the strengths & weaknesses of my 10th grader but since we got off to a slow start it may take sometime. Tutor was not available the first week which meant we have to schedule sessions twice per week to try and get ahead of what the child is covering in class. This requires me having to adjust the budget to accommodate. I was very pleased with little phrases Alic ...
