About Sam

While teaching mathematics and electrical subjects at the community college level I experienced a sense of achievement when the student expressed his appreciation for the help I provided. The student needs to know that he is making progress. I have learned to be patient with my own kids, and they have never hesitated to ask me for assistance when they needed it. I have learned a great deal in my own life to recognize that I had deficencies and have utilized the benefit of help from my superiors. My experience in working with people in industry has helped me recognize the different and sometimes difficult personalities that we can encounter in our environment. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a master's degree in applied mathematics plus I have been employed primarily as an electrical engineer in various industries as a full time employee. While working on a full time basis I taught mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for approximately 15 years. A good part of that time was teaching algebra courses.

Algebra 2

I have a master's degree in electrical engineering and applied mathematics. I was employed as a full time electrical engineer in various industries for approximately 40 years. While working on a full time basis I taught mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for approximately 15 years.

Chess

I first got interested in the game of chess at about 12 years of age. Chess has been a hobby with me, and I have played competitive chess in several different organizations. I have studied chess from some of the books I have on the subject which describe its many openings and end games. I enjoy the challenges of the game.

Electrical Engineering

I have a bachelors, masters degree in electrical engineering and masters degree in applied mathematics. I have over sixty-five years of work experience in this field which include employment with a utility company, computer company, automotive company, switchgear manufacturer and defense contractor. I have approximately 20 years experience teaching both electrical subjects and mathematics subject at the community college level.

Elementary Math

I taught various mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for over 15 years while employed as a full time electrical engineer in various industries. Some of the classes I taught had students working part time that had forgotten some of the basics they had in school and needed a refresher course.

Finite Math

I have taught Finite Math at the community college level at least five times. I have had numerous occasions to review this material and taught the class recently. I have three or four reference books used to teach the class.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel on an every day basis as a spread sheet while employed as an engineer and at home to keep track of various data. As an engineer curves of comparative data of similar components were used to evaluate the better product. In home applications excel can be used in creating mortgage payment schedules, plotting stock trends and transactions.

Prealgebra

I have been employed primarily as a full time electrical engineer in various industries as a full time employee and taught algebra and other mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for over 15 years. A good part of that time was teaching algebra courses.

Precalculus

I have a master's degree in applied mathematics plus I have been employed primarily as an electrical engineer in various industries as a full time employee. While working on a full time basis I taught mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for approximately 15 years. A good part of that time was teaching algebra courses.

Trigonometry

I taught various mathematics subjects on a part time basis at the community college level for over 15 years. Many of the classes I taught required some knowledge of trigonometry to better understand the material. In college, I have taken various calculus classes and calculus cannot be taken without a good knowledge of trigonometry.
