Georgia Tech (Master's)
Originally, I graduated with honors with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. A few years later, I completed a master of science in computer science with a focus on human computer interaction. My background in both of these areas has helped make me successful as a mathematics instructor, because I recognize which topics require the most attention for future success.
I have experience tutoring multiple levels of math including pre-algebra, beginning algebra, intermediate algebra, functions, statistics, and trigonometry, and pre-calculus and discrete math. I especially love teaching “tricks” to make math easier and more memorable.
I have taught a variety of algebra courses using a number of different approaches at the local community college during the past five years. I have received regular outstanding reviews from my students. I provide opportunities for students to practice the skills they are learning immediately, so I can provide feedback before they become overwhelmed or frustrated on their own.
In addition, I have reviewed several algebra textbooks providing feedback to the publishers and authors. This experience has been especially valuable as I am familiar with multiple ways of presenting a topic. If a student doesn’t understand the material when it is presented one way, we can come at it from another direction. I encourage and support my students in making connections between what they have learned in the past and what they are currently studying.
My approach to teaching is to verify that the basic concepts are understood so they can be built on as we move forward. I like to use real world analogies and humor whenever possible to keep the topic fresh and applicable.
I aim to be flexible and responsive in my scheduling as I know how hard it can be to catch up once a student falls behind.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your mathematical endeavors. Originally, I graduated with honors with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. A few years later, I completed a master of science in Read more
Joanne has been a load of help for me. She is very understanding and is great at explaining methods to help me remember important details. She is also very positive and kind. I am looking forward to doing more work with her in the future.
First meeting went great! Joanne is extremely professional and is very understanding and patient. I look forward to doing more work with her.
I cannot say enough good things about Joanne. She was on time at our meeting place. She is very friendly. I am a non-traditional student, and she exhibited the patience of Job which is what I sorely needed. She was very knowledgeable and prepared for our meeting. She brought useful materials with her, i.e. reference books, charts, calculator, etc. She is amazing. I would highly recommend Joanne if you are struggling with college algebra.
Update: This is our fourth meeting. I felt we needed to back the speed down just slightly. Material is definitely review, but I need a minute to wrap my mind around it. Joanne is very knowledgeable and these processes come to her like water flowing off the back of a duck. Me, not so much, which is why I've hired a tutor. All in all the meeting was productive, however, I would have liked to have come away with a little more. Good meeting.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
