In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Diversity in Education is one area I have been trained as part of my Bachelor of Music Education degree. My personal experiences include: my spouse and one son are Aspergers-PDD-NOS classification. As a regular part of my substitute teaching, I have encountered students needing specialized education which suites their learning styles.
I have taught Biblical Hebrew for 10 years. I have been in numerous Bible study groups, studying either by subject or book of the Bible. My classes have included Bible Characters, Pentateuch, Romans and Hebrew foundations for the Christian faith.
I have performed professionally and recreationally on clarinet for over 30 years. My experience includes: Dixieland, German Band, Klezmer, community bands, orchestras, theater, college level band and orchestras. I currently am earning my BME degree, with clarinet as my main instrument.
Between my experience home-educating my eleven children, tutoring friends' children, substituting, and educational workshops, I am ready to create a curriculum with goals based on benchmarks that your child encounters in school.
I have extensive experience with elementary math in home-educating my eleven children through elementary, tutoring other people's children, and substitute teaching, since 1985.
I enjoy creating General Music lessons which fully engage all the senses of Elementary children: dance, motion to music (movement), hearing, sight (mapping musc), simple instruments such as percussion or recorders or even home-made instruments (sense of touch). I have also taught a self-designed curriculum of Music Appreciation/History for Middle School.
I have experience teaching grammar since 1988, both in private instruction and public schools. I strongly believe that proper grammar is not too hard for students to master, and has a great effect on their ability to function in many school subjects, and everyday language needs. We will cover sentence structure, subject/verb agreement, paragraph structure, and application such as correspondence, ACT/SAT testing, resumes, speeches and other written work.
I teach mainly Biblical Hebrew, including reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary with the purpose of reading the Old Testament in the original language in order to enhance Biblical studies. I have done this with children from 6-60. I am currently working on a conversational, Modern Hebrew course, and would love to have students help me refine this process.
I am always trying to expand my knowledge of Literature, authors, and styles personally. Working with students gives me a perfect way to learn as they learn, or to review works I am familiar with! I own several anthologies of both American and British Literature, and two complete classic sets.
I have been a professional musician since 1975, performing in groups and solo on clarinet and piano. I currently am pursuing my Bachelor of Music Education degree. I have also taught private lessons on a variety of instruments and voice over the years including: clarinet, piano, saxophone. I have studied music theory extensively at the college level, and have taught it to my students as it occurs in their music during lessons or with theory textbooks over the years. I am familiar with Western Music History and composers and their various composition techniques from a theoretical viewpoint, applying Solfege and written music to demonstrate intervals, rhythms, harmony and counterpoint.
I utilize word lists from "Why Johnny Can't Read", phonic Bible stories and a multitude of Phonic games to assist students in unlocking the code for English mastery, both reading and writing. English is one of the most complicated languages to learn, and I employ various mnemonics to assist in identifying the irregular spellings.
I have given piano lessons to students 5-50+ for the past 30 years, including my own children. I have mostly used John Thompson methods, but also enjoy using any music the student already owns in order to keep music costs down. I do have an annual recital for students to showcase what they have learned, often performing duets with beginning students in order to keep the stress of solos down. I teach music theory as it occurs in the student's music in order to keep it relevant to where they are in their development. I encourage ear training, composition, and music reading mastery.
I like making real life applications to pre-algebra so that students understand the purpose behind the concepts. Drawing pictures, using mnemonics and trying one thing after another until that light bulb of understanding goes on is my strength!
My grammar, spelling, and syntax rules are fresh in my mind, as I have homeschooled my children, proof-read for my college friends, and write myself. I can not only find errors, but suggest smooth edits to help students express thoughtfully whether it is persuasive, expository, creative writing, or prose.
I have taught in private and public school situations on all levels of reading, using a variety of methods including Davis, (The Gift of Dyslexia) and Flesch, (Why Johnny Can't Read). I like to utilize playdough, paint, games like hangman, word searches, or word games.
Spelling is essential to good communication. I like to include a study of etymology of words in order to understand the variations we find in the English language. Drills, games, and mnemonics are my methods for spelling. I have taught spelling in private and public school settings since 1988.
I have extensive experience as a student and as a teacher organizing and time managing pursuits for learners. Home-Schooling my eleven children, working on my own Bachelor's degree, completing Massage Therapy training/certification, and assisting students with learning disabilities, elementary to college level, are some examples of my experience in this area.
I love to help students acquire new vocabulary, study lists they are given by their teachers, or to create vocabulary based on their current reading. I use repetition, matching, flashcards and other games, even with 6-12th graders, and they love it!
Vocal music: I was church choir director for 2 years, have had conducting, vocal methods on the college level as part of my Music Education degree which I am working on. I also have experience with private vocal lessons and coaching.
I have taught writing in private and public schools to individuals and groups. I am honing my skills and learning even more styles while pursuing my BME degree.
