My name is DeLon W. I am a recent graduate of Michigan State University, which is one of the best teacher preparation programs in the country. I am currently completing my last month of student-teaching and working towards earning a Masters in Teaching and Curriculum. I will be receiving certifications in all K-5 subjects (science, language arts, and social studies). Thus far, I have worked with students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. I have a passion for educating underprivileged children in urban school settings, which is why my undergraduate program involved teaching methods that appeal to diverse students. I particularly enjoy teaching English/Language Arts and science at the elementary level, but I have experience teaching interactive whole-group and small-group lessons in all subjects. My philosophy is that all children have unique learning styles and interests; thus, one-on-one tutoring is something I believe all students would ultimately benefit from. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I will be receiving certification in all subjects K-5 within the next month. I have experience teaching interactive lessons in math, science, language arts, and social studies to a whole-group and within small groups. My tutoring methods include meeting students where they are, creating an instructional plan, and having the student reflect on his/her progress after each session. ELA and math lessons will include a guided practice, an independent practice, and assessments to monitor the student's progress.
