About Michael

I like to learn and I like to share what I've learned.

After getting undergraduate and Master's degrees in Psychology I earned a Ph.D. in Physiology and then did postdoctoral work in neurophysiology before being forced to find a paying job. I was on the faculty/staff of the University of Chicago and Northwestern University before going to the private sector where I've worked for a number of years providing clinical neurophysiology services. I recently discovered MOOCs and have completed Coursera courses in Cryptography, Engineering Statics, Neuroeconomics, and Statistical Analysis of fMRI data among others. I'm mostly self taught with respect to computers but I can certainly help with things like MS-Office, internet searching and such.

On the teaching side of things, I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade Math and Science, Physiology to Nursing Students, various aspects of clinical neurophysiology to medical students, residents and physicians. I've lectured at national conferences, written book chapters, presented at national conferences and published in peer reviewed journals. As I said, I like to share what I've learned.

I think that teaching needs to be structured around the goals of the learner. Are you looking to prepare for a career or further study in a subject? Do you simply want to get a passing grade in a course or test? Are you having trouble with a single concept or is does everything the teacher says sound like a foreign language? Every learner is unique and our the first step is to define what you want and what I can offer. I'll do that for free and we can make a plan from there.

I look forward to hearing from you,
Mike

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
