I can help you or your child become more proficient in the following subject areas: English, grammar, reading, and the natural sciences (1-8th grades). I've been tutoring/substitute teaching in the Sault Area Schools for the last two years now. I've worked with special needs students and in regular classrooms. I have a reputation for being a patient, caring person who sincerely enjoys seeing people succeed.
Besides experience tutoring in the classroom I also have extensive experience in writing; I've written three books and hundreds of articles. I am constantly updating my knowledge in this area by reading books on grammar and writing. I also do a great deal of editing. It's a subject area I truly love. I am competent to teach in this subject to students in grades 1-12.
My secondary experience and knowledge is in the natural sciences. I'm a horticulturist with an extensive knowledge of soil science. I am competent to teach the natural sciences up through grade 6.
In addition, I have administered the GED test for the State of Michigan. I am familiar with the requirements of this test and believe I am competent to help students prep for the test, including the mathematics portion of the test.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I coached 5th and 6th grade basketball for five years and one year of "AAU," which was a travel team of middle school girls. During my stint as a coach we won two championships. Also during this stint I spent much time outside of coaching studying the fundamentals of coaching, play making, etc. I played basketball up through the 12th grade.
I have experience photographing pictures for articles, in other words, my pictures have been published. I'm proficient in the use of a Canon Rebel SLR digital camera, specifically. I've studied all aspects of photography, including lighting, portrait photography, action, landscape and nature photography. I even studied courses in the New York School of Photography program, but didn't never received a certificate (I studied from another student's materials from the course).
I graduated from Lake Superior State University with a BS in Psychology and a Minor in Counseling. I worked in a group home for mentally and physically handicapped individuals for over three years and one year as a vocational rehabilitation evaluator in what was then called a "sheltered workshop." This was back in the late 70's, early 80's. Most recently, I've become the regular substitute teacher in a special needs classroom at Sault Area High School in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. I'm 57 years old. I've been playing tennis since I was 10 years old. I once attended a summer camp which taught formal skills in tennis. I also gave private lessons to two kids one summer while still in high school. I'm a "quick study" who will make sure to brush up on the latest techniques before offering my services.
