Michigan State University (Master's)
I am currently a high school Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher, with 14 years of experience teaching and coaching. I love working with teenagers who have a desire to understand the complex concepts of Chemistry, and desire to make Chemistry fun as well as instilling confidence in students that they can learn to understand any topic in Chemistry. Besides Chemistry, I have played and coached soccer at the high school and collegiate level, and continue to play and coach. I also have a strong background in Track and Field, with 10 years experience running short to middle distance events. I now have two small children of my own and have decided to offer my tutoring services in the Saline/Ann Arbor area in order to better connect with my own community. I have a rather long daily commute to school, so I would enjoy working with students that are closer to where my family lives.
I love Chemistry, and my goal in teaching is to help kids love Chemistry, too! I often approach topics and concepts in more unusual (and hopefully more interesting) ways in order to help a diversity of learners achieve understanding. I have worked with students of all levels and have seen great success from them and improvement in attitude and scores.
I hold degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Spring Arbor University, and a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Biological Studies (so Biology and Chemistry combined) from Michigan State University. I have taught Chemistry for 14 years now, and AP Chemistry for 3 years. I have also attended 2 separate AP Chemistry summer institutes that have broadened my understanding of not only AP Chemistry curriculum, but also the content and format of the AP Chemistry exam from the perspective of the exam developers and readers.
So whether you find yourself struggling with a particular Chemistry topic or unit, or are looking for that extra boost to move to the head of your class, let me help you! I can also help you unlock some of the "secrets" of the AP Chemistry exam and present some great practice techniques and study tips that will get you ready to not only tackle this challenging test, but do it with confidence that you will succeed! It is not easy, but it is very manageable for any student with the drive to succeed! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
