About Emily

I'm a graduate student who offers dynamic and affordable study sessions, test prep, and homework help for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. I'm currently earning my second master's degree before attending law school, and I have years of experience working as a college-level writing tutor at Arizona State University. My specialty is helping students not only improve but excel, so if you want to become a stronger writer, prepare for exams, or improve in a particular subject, I can help!

I hold a Master of Liberal Studies, as well as a B.A. in History and a B.A. in Political Science, from Arizona State University, and I have completed extensive college coursework in history (world, North American, and European), political science (including statistics), English/literature, creative writing, and religious studies. While working as a writing tutor and graduate writing consultant for Arizona State University's Academic Success Programs, I became skilled at helping students with all types of assignments, grammar and editing issues, and citation styles. Since the students I tutored could range from a freshman writing a history paper to a PhD candidate working on a dissertation, I learned how to tailor my approach to best fit each student's unique learning style.

I also have worked as a teaching assistant in a variety of college-level humanities courses, so I know what teachers are looking for in successful papers and what students can do to best prepare for exams. For subject area tutoring, I make sure to not only review the content material with students but also work on reading skills, study skills, and note-taking strategies. Another subject I tutor is SAT/ACT prep, in particular the reading and essay portions. I am very skilled at helping students prepare quickly and effectively for standardized tests by emphasizing content knowledge, time management skills, and test-taking strategies. Having placed in the 99th percentile for both the SAT and ACT, I know what skills are necessary in order to perform well on standardized tests, and I repeatedly have seen the scores of the students I work with improve by multiple points.

I firmly believe that with guidance, practice, and hard work, any student can achieve academic success, so contact me today to schedule an in-person or online lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am very skilled at helping students prepare quickly and effectively for standardized tests by emphasizing not only content knowledge but time management skills and test-taking strategies. Having placed in the 99th percentile in ACT English, I know what skills are necessary in order to succeed, and I repeatedly have seen the scores of my students improve by multiple points.

American History

I currently am a graduate student earning a Master of Arts in North American History from Arizona State University, and I also hold a B.A. in History. I have completed over 45 credit hours of college-level history coursework (mainly in American history), and I had a research paper published as an undergraduate student. I am proficient in historical methods, library research, critical analysis, and the historiography of American history. I can help students not only understand the subject material but also develop the critical reading and writing skills that are necessary in order to successfully think, research, and write like a historian.

Bible Studies

I minored in religious studies at Arizona State University, and I completed college-level coursework in the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) and the New Testament. I am knowledgeable about not only the content of the Bible but its history, its numerous translations, and the controversies surrounding it. I also took history courses about Christianity in America (such as the arrival of the Puritans) and the development of American religious traditions (such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Therefore, I can help students who are taking a Bible studies course in a religious setting (such as a parochial school or church) or in a secular setting (such as a university).

English

For my master’s degree in Liberal Studies, I completed graduate-level coursework in English, including courses about the genre of the memoir, poetry, and creative writing, and I had multiple creative writing pieces published. I also worked as a writing tutor and a graduate writing consultant for Arizona State University’s Academic Success Programs, providing assistance to students during any stage of the writing process and offering feedback on topics such as grammar usage, citations, and sentence structure. I was in charge of creating writing workshops that students could attend, including a workshop about grammar and writing a thesis-driven paper.

Political Science

I hold a bachelor's degree in political science from Arizona State, and I completed courses that covered a wide variety of topics: American government, current issues in international politics, world politics, comparative politics, political statistics, political ideologies, women and politics, contemporary global controversies, empirical political inquiry, and ethics and human rights. I also completed an original piece of research as a capstone project for my major that explored the public's perception of certain political figures based on how they were portrayed in pop culture. I can help students who are struggling in a political science course, preparing for AP tests, or designing their own experiment.

Religion

I minored in religious studies at Arizona State University, and the courses I took to earn the minor covered subjects such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, Native American religious traditions, and symbols and myth. I also completed extensive college-level coursework in American religious traditions and American religious history, and I am very well-versed in Catholic tradition for those in Catholic school who may want help in a religion course.

Social Studies

I hold bachelor's degrees in history and political science from Arizona State University, and I am working toward earning a master's degree in history as well. I have completed coursework in geography and economics, and I have worked as a teaching assistant in college-level humanities classes. I also have a lot of experience tutoring high school students in social studies.
