Hello! My name is Amanda, and I am a certified middle school and high school ELA teacher. For the past year, I worked in Atlanta, Georgia at a middle school teaching 8th grade ELA; prior to that, I taught high school English for two years in Dearborn, Michigan. I know that ELA is not always the easiest subject to learn, but I think that can all change with more practice. My promise is to make lessons fun, and to make sure that you progress to beyond proficiency in your academic ELA/reading/writing classes. We will focus on your weaknesses, and we will make you better by learning and utilizing your strengths! I welcome the opportunity to help you learn, as ELA contains such an important skill set that is needed for academics and beyond.
Currently I hold both a Michigan Provisional Certificate for Secondary ELA and Journalism (6-12 grade), as well as a Georgia Professional Teaching Certificate for Secondary ELA and Journalism (6-12 grade). My experience is comprised of teaching test prep for ACT, SAT, and middle school state tests; teaching 8th grade English, 9th grade English, 10th grade English, and 12th grade Journalism; and teaching with the Common Core ELA standards. I'm also experienced in utilizing reading strategies for learners with reading weaknesses, as well as integrating writing strategies for learners with weaknesses in content, organization, or grammar. On top of all of this, my passion is writing-thus, I love vocabulary and grammar! Yes, a vibrant vocabulary and proper English grammar will promote cross-curriculum and collegiate success! English is simply a subject area that requires some practice and knowledge of integral rules--and tutoring is the perfect opportunity to gain that practice, and thus master your English skills.
Please contact me in order to learn more about availability, and if you have any questions about my experience/teaching content. I will post fixed schedule updates once fall approaches, but for now I am flexible with scheduling! I would prefer a public library or coffee shop in the Royal Oak or nearby area for any tutoring appointments scheduled, and rest assured that I will have our specific learning plans prepared for that meeting as well as helpful, take-home work that reinforces content learned (that will be something you can CHOOSE to do on your own/show me if preferred at the next tutoring session together in order to progress at a quicker pace). I am looking forward to helping you/your learner make positive academic progress!
Additional note: If your prefer a home-based location, then I am willing to travel to nearby areas within a 20 mile radius. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Journalism Major from Michigan State University, and I went back to school for an ELA teaching certificate right after. I've been teaching high school writing for the past four years, and I love helping others fine tune their writing's content/organization/style. Everyone can have a writing voice, and I'm definitely excited to help you find yours in order to secure your admission into PA school.
