About Duncan

I have many years experience working in corporate environments, as well as several years work as a museum curator.

I began my career in the automotive field, and worked in several different areas, including technical illustration and supervision, and later as a designer in 3D math modeling. Then, I chose to pursue a career in Art History, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oakland University, and later, a Masters Degree in Art History from Wayne State University These degrees prepared my for my work as a Curatorial Assistant and Curator at the Flint Institute of Arts. In both corporate and museum work, I trained many entry-level employees and interns, helping many individuals learn on the job training and assisting them with the necessary skills to succeed in their work. I have a great deal of skill and patience working with students, understanding their individual needs, providing guidance and clear understanding of the complex demands of both technology and writing skills that were essential to the areas of work that I have been employed. This includes fostering excellent writing skills, formal composition (both in art, art theory, musical theory and composition, English, literary theory, grammar, and proofreading.

I look forward helping you to achieve the skills and knowledge you desire as your tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I've studied advanced musical composition as an undergraduate at Oakland University, which included composing for contemporary classical and jazz ensembles.

I wrote several music compositions for soloists (piano, clarinet, flute, oboe) and ensembles (wind quintet, strings, and voice). I composed works that employed traditional and advanced tonal harmonies and more avant-garde works, which utilized twelve-tone techniques and chance (aleatoric) procedures, as well as writing jazz and pop music charts for small and large bands.

I currently am working with computer-based sample instruments, utilizing Logic 9 as my digital audio workstation, and several instrumental libraries, including Los Angeles Scoring Strings, Cinesamples, Project Sam, and Kontakt sound libraries that include the full palette of orchestral instruments. I also use Sibelius 5, a notation program that produces professional quality musical scores.

I am well qualified to teach computer-based classical, jazz, and electronic music production using the kind of software products I've listed above.

Macintosh

I have used a Macintosh computer and Apple products since 1995 for my work and personal use, including the production of freelance illustrations, musical compositions, and text documents on an 8 core Mac Pro, which has 16GB of ram and 4 internal hard drives.

I regularly use and am able to train a student in all the latest native Apple applications, including the latest Mac operating system (OS 10.8), Safari, iTunes, Calendar, I Photo, Contacts, Dashboard, Reminders,Preview, Notes, Podcast production, and audio/ midi composing and file production using Logic Studio 9 and Garageband.

I also use a Mac version of Microsoft Office, which includes Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Powerpoint.

I would be able to train a new user in all of the basic Mac functions as well as advanced ideas regarding file and folder creation and management, software installation and updating, email, keyboard shortcuts, printer and scanning setups, wireless hub implementation, storage backup, and monitor setups.
