I learned my computer skills as a Business Analyst for a major newspaper publishing company, and have applied those skills to other enterprises in the private, non-profit, and public sector. I have taught fellow employees, senior citizens, job-seekers, and students (but aren't we all students, really?).
Before we begin the learning process, I conduct a proficiency pre-assessment of the student to determine the areas in which we need to focus. That way, we don't waste time on skills that have already been implemented. If your skills need to be strengthened, however, then we will do that with exercises that implement new skills as well.
Another vital skill that I emphasize is the mitigation of errors. I will provide the student with strategies to avoid in order to reduce and eliminate errors and error messages.
I also teach MS Word and PowerPoint. I apply the same strategies to these subjects as I do to Excel, as the storytelling aspects of these applications are approached from the visualization of the story as well. My specialty is in Excel. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with job-seekers for the past four years. I have a support group in which we discuss current topics in career development and reentry into the workforce. I have worked with the local employment agency to build job-seeking strategies for job-seekers like resume building, managing social network presence, building one's own brand and interview techniques and strategies.

I have taught many students the best ways to approach presentations, not just from the nuts and bolts of PowerPoint, but from the aspect of how it is important to get the message across, tell an important story, stay on point, and most importantly, to inspire others to take action.
I base this and other trainings on the MS Office Specialist tests, so if the student is seeking a job, or if they are in a school setting, the test they take will very likely be based on the same rubrics. If the student is trying to increase their knowledge base, the framework is also useful in that it teaches them the correct terminology, so that any future learning can be quickly understood from printed and online materials.
I have been leading discussions, giving presentations, and giving speeches on several topics including, but not limited to, advocacy, computer skills, inspirational themes, and motivational themes for over 25 years.
Although I have done considerable self-teaching on speaking, I have had formal training as part of my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and training through Dale Carnegie.
