Bio

As a Grinnell graduate in English Literature, I particularly enjoy helping translate story problems into mathematical numbers and terms. From GRE Rate/Work problems to Pre-Algebra operations of equality, I like to empower the student with an open mind and with a 'can-do' attitude. I have taught with DPS, from kindergarten to Honors 12th grade English. I have tutored from pre-algebra to Algebra 2 and Geometry for students at Cass Tech., Dunkel Middle School, Farmington High School, Levy Middle...

I have tutored from pre-algebra to Algebra 2 and Geometry for students at Cass Tech., Dunkel Middle School, Farmington High School, Levy Middle School, Oak Valley Middle School, Royal Oak High School, U. of D. Jesuit and at Walton Charter Academy.

Having taken Latin in high school and in college, and, Greek in graduate school, I believe critical thinking, beginning with a rapid fluency of the multiplication table along with a beginning knowledge of basic Latin and Greek suffixes and prefixes, is the bridge connecting literacy to numeracy. The student must be able to create a mental picture from words, and from the picture write the appropriate math expression. The student must also 'own' the basic theorems and postulates of Euclidean Geometry. He or she should be able to close the eyes and just imagine perfect blackness interrupted with white lines, circles, and geometric solids floating about.

It is my job not only to explain the problem but to guide the student to an understanding of space and relationships so that the student will be able to explain the problem to me. What operation will we use? What words suggest this particular operation? Let 'x' be what? Why?. What are our units? I simply enjoy when a student says, "Oh yeah, I get it now." I want to help students 'get-it'. I have an updated (April 29, 2013) Child Neglect/Sexual Abuse Clearance From The State of Michigan. (This is mandatory in all school systems!) I also have a Website.
